Couldn't you insert a 20mm collet into the chuck holding a 20mm shaft, chuck that up in the lathe with the small end held in a centre to cut the groove?

Hopefully, the attached dwg will take some of the mystery out of how Arboga retain the arbor, without a draw bar. Pretty sneaky really.

As an alternate to using a large C-shaped washer, I've now heard of using an external circlip with an appropriate circular groove. I guess what ever works is ok.

I'll still go with the C-washer idea since I also got three different ones when I bought the mill.

What the smaller ones are for, (narrower width slot, same OD) I don't know, unless Clarkson chucks came in smaller diameters.

AB, might have to borrow your white coat, stethoscope and magnifiers, to get some proper measurements. Just kiddin, the gap between the top face of the C-washer and the underside of the spindle, is about 4mm.

Hi Greg, the groove in the existing Clarkson arbor, is not radial, one groove each side opposite each other, although I reckon it could have been.

I don't quite understand your question in post 16, old age on my part for sure.

Hi Ken. I was referring to a possible lathe set-up to machine the Er chuck:

First, insert it into the Arboga and scribe the gauge line with a carbide scribe. This defines your groove location obviously. Next, insert the largest collet into the chuck and tighten it down on a length of steel. Insert that steel into the lathe chuck and run the tailstock into the small end of the MT3 taper. Cut the groove. Done.

    Greg,
The end of Ken's MT3 is theaded. I guess putting a bolt with lock nut in and drilling it for a center would be ok?

Yeah that'd work, but the one I have has female threads just recessed enough that a large centre would fit without making a spud.

If KJ's Hercus was working (is it?), all he would have to do is install the collet chuck in the 3 Morse taper spindle and cut his groove. He would not have to mount the chuck backwards.

Talking about my latest acquisition, the ER32 collet chuck, I have ordered from the UK, three screw-in tangs. For less than a couple of quid each, I figured it not worth making my own, although it would have been a good exercise.

Greg, your idea of fitting the ER collet chuck, up in a lathe, and machining a radial groove, has a lot of appeal. It certainly would be the easiest way to do it.

I will bring it over next visit, there may be something we are both missing as to why this was not done. A radial groove, in my opinion, would not weaken it very much.

    Dave,

Please keep your mouth shut. Next thing we'll know is that Greg is flying everyday, for months on end.

He'd probably love that to pay for the latest trailer load of tooling and ancillery bits and pieces.

AB, you have the right idea re using the Hercus, 'cept it aint finished yet.

    I know, I know, there's no excuse that's acceptable.

M12 screw in tangs arrived yesterday. Ordered on the 2nd, they have only taken a few days to arrive from the UK. Well made with a nice black oxide finish.
