    Default Recondition a lathe bed

    hello

I read about a project where a guy had reconditioned his lathe bed using strips of metal . Sounds weird but he glued on new lengths of metal with a special LOCTITE formula , then had the bed ground . He researched it , it wasn't a silly back yard thing , but a genuine engineering project . He contacted various people in the industry and it was OK to do it . Anyone heard of this ....MIKE

    Hi Mike,
That would be a short version of how its done. It must have either been in a very bad way or he was doing something specail, as normally they just regrind the ways, of course you cant do that forever.

    Hi Mike,
Can't help there sorry, I have no idea, someone else should be able to point you in the right direction.
Of course a real man would scrape it by hand. flat ways, to easy.

A few companies in Melbourne would do that work, but it is cost prohibitive to do it to anything but a special machine..

    Default Hercus

Maybe Hercus in Adelaide would do a regrind , speaking hypothetically as I have no need at the moment . But, it is a handy thing to know if the need does arise . As time goes on, these specialist companies are dying out , not enough work to keep heads above water . It is cheaper to buy a new import asian lathe than to rebuild an old one, sad to say. MIKE

I got a price to regrind my lathe bed. Half the problem was finding a grinder big enough as it is 1.8m long. The quote was around $3000 and that was just for grinding - I had to get it there, stripped and ready to go.

Hi all, I have an Atlas lathe and got a quote from John Tatam from Machine Tool Automation (MTA), Phone 0299794866 Mona Vale in Sydney , they also recommend a carrier they use to transport the machines, Simons Transport, this is what he told me,
mind you this was about 2 years ago, I haven't done anything about it yet, but I will some day,
for my flat bed lathe, saddle ,cross slide, compound slide, and tailstock, to grind all surfaces was $650.00 could be maybe another hundred or two if it is very bad, they have a web site , so check it out, I will ring again, early next year, I will get it done for sure, he even said to me that if the weather is not good on weekends he goes to the workshop to do some work, very dedicated,
    cheers, Richard.

Mike Hercus charge $600 + GST for a Hercus lathe. I would think another make of a similar size would be around the same.

Sort of related to the original topic - there seems to be a bit of interest in the idea of using a granite fortified epoxy as a means of making/stiffening tool beds - Epoxy granite - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia or http://www.cnccookbook.com/CCMillEpoxyFill.htm

Perhaps that was what you were thinking of???
