Having bought "Freddie" (my 24" shaper) from grays i may be a bit biased......without them i would not own a shaper. BUT the sale i got her from was in young....the middle of no-where. All the gear there, including the beautiful bianztaki mill, that i should have bought Milling machine, Biernatzki model U2, with 3 x T slot working bed approx 1, Auction (0102-5002979) | GraysOnline Australia yes the pictures do not do it justice, went for pittance. I noticed the same in the auction at leeton where Joe and i bid on the J&S surface grinders. Any remote areas the prices seem to be reasonable. Put the auction in the big cities though and the prices go through the roof.

Or more to the point I think it is big ticket auctions...
I saw a Rockwell hardness tester in Bundaberg go for a pittance on Grays....
One thing against grays is the times I have contacted them they will not help load and they say you need a written procedure to move what you buy if it is big, insurance as well as qualifications to move it... Whatever that all means..Light red, the colour of choice for the discerning man.

Yes i had to do a safe work method statement....basically just outlining PPE needed, the risks involved and how to minimize them. I found an online template and copied it.....With both the Shaper and J&S grinders I/Joe contacted the actual place selling. Although Grays has the standard no help to load spiel, in both cases the sites had forklifts and in the shapers case gantry cranes that made loading a breeze....once she was light enough to lift out of the toolroom with the fork.
So if you are looking to bid, don't bother contacting Grays, talk to the vender.1915 17"x50" LeBlond heavy duty Lathe, 24" Queen city shaper, 1970's G Vernier FV.3.TO Universal Mill, 1958 Blohm HFS 6 surface grinder, 1942 Rivett 715 Lathe, 14"x40" Antrac Lathe, Startrite H225 Bandsaw, 1949 Hercus Camelback Drill press, 1947 Holbrook C10 Lathe.

Where are we Heading?
RC
The closing of the Toowoomba Foundry is yet another "Nail in the Coffin"
I know plenty of businesses that have gone by the wayside.
What is happening to our country?
Accepted, that nothing stays the same & change will happen.
However I keep asking myself, "Where are we heading"?
regards
Bruce

Most interesting Michael. I wonder how this will take place as when I was there some of the gear had already been moved out.
Perhaps it just has to be moved back again. Not often we get a second bite at the cherry.

Here is the main part of the email I received today and it explains it.
"You may recall in early September being involved in a Graysonline public auction of equipment from the CMI Foundry in Toowoomba. As it transpired, the majority of equipment was purchased by one bidder who was in subsequent negotiations to purchase all of the assets of the foundry. Settlement of the purchased items has not occurred which we cannot go into detail about as it may be subject to legal action.
What this means is the Liquidators have instructed us to re-auction all of the assets that were previously offered. We have set up new sales and with the majority of auctions commencing on the 1stof November."
Bit unfortunate for everyone involved. It does mean some more agonising over photos and bids again.Cheers from Micheal.
