Less expensive than the Swiss stands are the Israeli Nogas. Depends on whether you reckon Israelis are European.

I have a Noga stand and I like it.

Here is a link to the Etalon that I mentioned. This version has a vacuum base, but you can always find a Chinese magnetic base to screw the arms to. That is what I did with mine, and I keep the vac base for use on the granite surface plate. The price is $148 which kay be comparable to the smaller Noga base

Olivier at SQD alao carries the German made Mauser stand, which is more conventional and compact.

While this has nothing to do with Euro delights it is a continuation of the discussion Ewan and I were having about the adjustment of the Tesa. The Swiss provided adjustment for measuring rod wear by allowing the graduated barrel to be repositioned axially on the main screw. A lock screw is loosened and the barrel moved accordingly. Checking the 25-50 and 50-75 rods with gauge blocks showed the 0-25 rod to be worn by 0.15mm. The micrometer has signs of considerable use. It is not difficult to readjust the barrel position to compensate for the wear but because there is wear the barrel will require readjustment each time a different length rod is used.

Mitutoyo on the other hand provided adjustment on each depth rod, a more convenient solution. Unfortunately I don't have a full set of rods for the Mitutoyo and the pickings are slim on imperial Ebay USA.

Another question for Ewan. Does the knurled collar immediately above the base move on yours? I thought that it would be a spindle lock but mine's locked tight.

I tried in vain to get that loose, everything short of pliers or vice grips. I even tried one of those rubber strap thingo's (some sort of snake wrench)
Looking down the barrel there looks to be nothing like a spindle lock in there. A bit disappointing really.

As for the length of the rods, the only thing i can suggest is to carefully adjust the length of the rest of the rods to match the worn one....you'll need that 100-200mm tesa mic now

The difference between the 0-25 and 25-50 on mine is about 5um, nothing really to worry about. I havn't checked the rest and will have to wait to get my "Gardiner certified" 2", 3" and 4" blocks back.

Thankd to Greg and his Hahn and Kolb suggestion i bought a brand new H&K 1um dial.....the sender then offered me a new Kafer .01x5mm dial for 25euro, no extra postage....i have asked him about DTI's and he is getting back to me. Lovely chap from Austria, not a problem sending to "down under" as he calls us!
The H&K is not a tesa rebadged, it is German made, as is the Kafer. Just have to wait and see what they are like.

Yes i went a bit mad....but i have bought some nice stuff

Firstly a 100-200mm Tesa Mic. Fantastic condition, like new, anvils polished like mirrors still and only some engraving on the barrel.
The seller still has 1 left if anyone is interested (and BT doesn't lash out)

My Stiefelmayer frame level. The cross vial is cracked but i new that already....Otherwise it is in great shape, spot on accurate out of the box, sides parallel and using R.C's method within 2um over 200mm of being square. I know toolexchange has some vials so i will ask him to see if i can get a new cross vial

My 5 mics are a bit of a disappointment.....what was advertised as a 75-100mm is a second 50-75. The 2 "keepers" are the Carl Zeiss and Keilpart Suhl, they have larger than standard barrels which makes them really easy to read. The 0-25mm Tesa has seen a lot of action, the plastic grip is cracked and the anvils scratched. I'll give them all a good clean and take stock from there....

It really amazes me just how many really good levels are available out of Europe I have watched 3 .05mm/m or better Stiefelmayers all go for less than 60 euro in the last week. Definitely the place to go for a nice used level.....and DHL out of Germany is reasonably priced, the calipers only cost me 9.10 euro to post.

DHL Germany is a good service price wise especially for larger items. They tend to be somewhat slow, but they are the best in terms of value. I had a 27kg package posted via DHL and it was very economical. Swiss Post would not accept anymore than 20kg to Australia, so across the border it went. I have my eye on a few heavy items (Cylinder heads including twin camshafts etc) which all seem to ship via DHL on a fixed rate of about $150 Euros, which is exceptional for airmail at that weight.

As for the levels, I need one! I was thinking Wyler, but they seem hard to find outside of SQD. I am not sure what I should be searching for on Ebay Germany? About the only thing I know is that a car head is a Zylinderkopf!

In the tool gloat thread Chris listed some search terms up. Also search for stiefelmayer, tesa, wyler, etc. You need to use eBay.de and eBay.fr though, and you will probably have to ask the sellar if they will post to aus. Google chrome with its built in translater is great, and when asking questions try to use simple English so when it translates it doesn't get garbled.....
