Scotchbrite & Low Density Nylon Abrasives
Agree with not using Scotchbrite on slideways.
Sometime ago I made mention of the damage, loose abrasive grains, can do to a lathe.
Scotchbrite is no exception.
Best to protect, & give extended life to a lathe by covering ways with a sheet of newspaper, when using any abrasive or filing, operations.
Abrasive grains, Alum Oxide or Sic Carbide are lightly bonded throughout the nylon web, in Scotchbrite products, thus the gentle finishing action of this product.
These grains can wreck a lathe prematurely. The grit embeds in the softer cast iron of the machine & then becomes a coarse lap.

Thanks Bruce for that information - slowly but surely I'm learning a lot thru all the posts made and I really appreciate it all. I take it that once I get my project finished one should also not use a Scotch-Brite that is suitable for wood use while project is still in the lathe?.
Today I was able to go into our nearby city with the wife and I visited a business that handles Scotch-Brite products used by local metal manufacturers - they showed me some pads 200mm x 115mm of various thicknesses - White was a fine pad - Grey the next one in the line is sorta Medium - Maroon is sorta course and Green is sorta rough. Please excuse my explanation of the pads.
I was told that these are used for metal cleaning generally - hence I brought one of each the Grey, Maroon and Green - white they had run out of so next week I'll grab one of those. Again I'm just learning about this product and I value all help you gentlemen have been offering me.
I'd like to personally thank Sacc51 for allowing me to hi-jack his thread, it was not intentional and for doing so I do apologise.
