Doesn't anyone actually go to their nearest nuts and bolts or fasteners shop any more????
My local one has them on the shelf.....Cheers,
Joe

Do they have 3/8" UNC ones Joe?
I can pretty much guarantee my local fastener shop won't have them. Or if they do, they won't have the size I want. Or they'll have serrated bottoms. In fact, I'm prepared to wager that if I rang the ten nearest nut & bolt shops to me, none of them would have 3/8 UNC flanged nuts with smooth bottoms. If I wasn't working all day tomorrow I'd give it a try.

OK, I'll try and remeber to check tomorrow. How many do you need?
Would you be able to turn or grind off the serrations if that's the only option available? Otherwise I would do it for you....Cheers,
Joe

I'd have to agree with you Chris, if it is metric, they have it, adjustable handled bolts, grade 8.8 all thread, nilocks, you name it. But when i say i need it in imperial, its always "i'll have to go out the back and see what we have". All they ever have is hex heads, cap heads and countersunk. All the good stuff is metric.

I have found lots of places to get 1/2' M12 and M16 so far.

Nev,
I've also had no trouble finding metric collar nuts. When I get around to making T-nuts (this weekend I hope) I think I'll tap them 8mm rather than 5/16".
metric collar nuts:
T-Nuts.com - Collar Nuts
He sells imperial t-nuts but only metric collar nuts. Go figure.

Thanks Joe. I really only NEED 4 nuts, but I'll take more if the price isn't OTT. They are usually case hardened, so I don't think turning off the serrations is an option. I could grind off the serrations on the pedestal grinder but I'm not sure how true the surface would end up.

Ewan,
after a few days of searching the web I agree with you. Because my milling attachment has 3/8 t-slots and I have a 3/8 UNC die, it seemed a no-brainer to make 3/8 t-bolts. If I can't source 3/8 UNC collar nuts I'll just do what Bryan does and make some nice thick washers.

I have to eat my words
Both my local nut and bolt places drew a blank.
Both have (serrated) flanged UNC nuts - one of them with a fairly thin hex section, the other with a standard height hex section. I would consider the second one OK, but the flange is on the thin side for a 'collar' nut. Neither place could get hold of 'proper' collar nuts in imperial sizes. One suggested that perhaps an American truck spares place might have them as spares for something
They are 'cheap' and I'd be happy to get and send you some.
PM me your address and I'll post some over.Cheers,
Joe

Collar nuts
Recently had to make some tee nuts and clamps for smaller work on a big mill, and found the nuts for purlin bolts were M12, and mild enough to turn off the serrations and contour the face slightly. In combination with a length if M12 allthread I soon had a useful clamp set. See your local builders supplies, or pick the loose ones off the ground on any construction site. Combustor.

Another member PM'd me and kindly offered me four collar nuts at cost. I've taken up his offer. Any future t-bolts and t-nuts I make will be metric!

Chris,
If you don't mind having washers coming out of your ears, here is a pretty cheap alternative to making your own -
