Thread: Forbes lathe rebuild - WIP

I have done a bit of reading of some old threads on the subject, it seems motor oil is not recomended, due to wear particles staying suspended in the oil because of its makeup.
Most pointed to a hydraulic oil with a viscosity index of 98. (Though I am running SAE30 engine oil in the hydraulics on my tractor )
Another suggestion was oil that goes in your compressor, as it ticked all the boxes. Another plus for compressor oil is you can buy it in small quantities.
Edit- I just reread them posts, engine oil is OK, as long as its a non-detergent type oil.Last edited by Ironwood; 20th September 2011 at 08:59 PM. Reason: add some info

Been a while since I updated this thread. So here is some of the latest additions.
I have fitted the emergency stop switch, and also a fwd/stop/rev switch and a potentiometer.
I have wired up the emergency stop switch to cut mains power to the VFD, as recomended by someone else.
It works OK, but when the switch is activated, the power to the VFD is cut, which stops power to the motor, but the lathe coasts to a stop.
I would rather this switch stop the lathe as quick as it does using the braking, so I am tempted to use the emergency stop function built into the VFD, this doesnt cut the power to the unit though, but it will stop the chuck from turning quicksmart.

I have mounted the VFD on the wall in a plastic container, it has a clip-lock lid. I was going to cut holes in the side of the container and put mesh over them for airflow, but I have just been taking the lid off when in use. I might just do it that way for now.

I have been fiddling around trying to adjust the headstock, it is cutting a bit of a taper, still needs a bit more adjustment when I called it quits this afternoon.
