Sold, now I have another machine for not much more than a vise.
Thanks for posting it Stewart, as I haven't been on ebay for months.
Much appreciated.

It had to come up now, my daughters boy friend just said 2 days ago his mate has a lathe and mill for sale for $200 each which I have to go and look at. Still for that price I couldn't knock it back as I was willing to pay $150 for a vise up until recently when Rod made the comment they where not much of a vise.
The main reason I bought it was to modify it or mine to go on the Alba as a vertical slotter which I have had in mind for a few years now. The Alba is still usable, but has a bit of wear, so this makes it the perfect candidate for the conversion.
I am still waiting for another guy to get back to me with another 24 inch shaper I am buying, his dad died and the family are still coming to terms with getting rid of the gear, so I will just sit back as I don't want to push in this sort of situation.

Sorry Ewan,
I missed your reply as I was doing something in between righting the last message. As you can see I have a plan for it, but will let you know if I change my mind, sorry mate.
I couldn't believe my luck when I read Stuarts post and found it was still there, I always seem to be a day late or it's always down south in the machine capital of Aus. And then those guys have the hid to say we have all the machinery up here, LOL

That's ok Dave, if I had seen it before you it would have been another story....then you would have heard on the news "wife kills husband after finding him in shed with another machine".
So how many is that, 4, 5?

Hi Ewan no I wish, nowhere near that many, if I had that many I would of offered you this one.
I got my little Douglas many years ago locally with pretty much another machine in parts minus the main castings, and them picked up the Alba a few years back which I posted about here,
https://www.woodworkforums.com/f65/ne...shaper-115314/
So I only have 2 and with this one it will make it 3, but with modding it to a slotter on the Alba means I will only have one Douglas shaper running and one slotter.
Hopefully I will score this other 24 inch shaper soon which means I will be able to leave the Alba set up as a vertical slotter.

Hi Dave,
Nice buy. I just spent $800.00 on mine today, and it doesn't look as good as yours.
Noticed it said manual included, any chance of scanning or photocopying it (if its in good condition and is worth using)? I really don't know how to use mine yet.
Cheers Ben.
ps If you want to post it to me, I could get some copies made up at work.
PM if you want work something out.

Holy crap.... If that thing's in as good a nick as it appears (as opposed to a Dulux refurb!), you got the steal of the year! I like how it took only 28 minutes in between Stewart posting it, and you posting you bought it

Hi Ben, thanks
I would say it's just the manual that can be had for free on the internet, but if it's something different I will let you and everybody else know and make it freely available to all, but like I said I doubt if it's anything but that free one.
As for condition who knows, it looks good paint wise, but hopefully it's not worn to much. I would rather buy a machine that hasn't been touched as it's gives you a indication of what it was used or abused like.
My other one looked crap when I bought it until I degreased it and gave it a scrub, but the only wear I could find would be called run it wear. It did have a few little dings here and there from the students but nothing major.
I am going down tomorrow while the son has a day off to pick it up, so I will know by tomorrow afternoon. He can load the engine crane onto the trailer tonight.
Still cant believe I was that lucky to score one with a vise, thanks again Stuart.
Also if it had been posted in the sticky ebay thread I probably would have missed it, as I only look there every now and again.
As for using it, they are not that hard once you get used to it, and you can get almost surface grinding finishes on the work with the right tool grind.
They are also great for prepping a plate for milling and taking off surface rust etc.
I posted a lathe tool up a while back, that grind also works good on the shaper.
If you need help with tooling and using it, just start another thread and I am sure you will get plenty of help and links to info. Phil also has the stick going around which would help I think, but have not seen it yet myself.

Hi Dave,
Thanks, I forgot I have the internet copy. Got excited and thought it might be a operators manual.
I am happy for you and envious at the same time. It looks good and possibly one owner? Mine is good, I'm really happy about with it, just paid a lot more. Oh well, win some lose some.
Cheers Ben.

Thanks guys, it now sounds like a good buy.
Just got off the phone to him and just like Dave the ebay machinery seller (Tissuecar) he is a really nice bloke. He has been an engineer all his life and built trains in his latter years. He is now going into a retirement home in around 12 months, so the gear has to go.
He has assured me it's in perfect condition along with the vice and said he is going to give me a book on shapers as well. He also assured me it will still be there when I arrive, LOL
Evidently he bought it off a close friend about 7-8 years ago, but not sure if this guy was the original owner, but will ask tomorrow.
He recently sold a large Hercus lathe (4ft bed) with a heap of attachments and also a milling machine. The Hercus lathe went to someone in Taree. I see by the feed back comments in his profile are positive and he sounded the same way on the phone.
After looking he also sold a Vertex dividing head for around $400, did someone here get that?
Ben,
If it is anything other than the parts diagram I will let you know and copy it, but from what I have heard over the years there was no manual.
I do have a TAFE book here with some info to get you started, it is only a small section but has some good tip etc in it. I will scan it for you over the next few days. If I forget and don't pm you by about Tuesday with it, just give me a yell.
The price will be forgotten soon, and you will still get years of enjoyment out of your machine, Also your machine will bring the same money back (if not more tidied up) if ever you decide to sell it down the track.
Matthew, (You lucky so and so.!!!)
Never mind you want pictures, everyone has seen a Douglas, WE want picture of your new gear, sounds good.
Dave
