    Default Gas Axe Welding Set

    G'day all,
Been thinking of upgrading from a Bernz-o-matic Mapp gas torch to an oxy set.
I've got the cylinders and an old set of torches and regulators which should go to the tip.
I've been looking at this item on ebay, and would be thankful for any opinions.

    Thanks,

    Hi Watson
You may not like mine but I present it as a caution.

Perhaps 95% of Australian Industry use predominantly the one brand of Australian made oxyacetylene plant that has been around for years.

I know of other overseas sourced clones which are not compatible with Australian made oxy plant equipment.Ie that the foreign cutting head will not safely mate with the Aussie made torch body and a fire or explosion ensues.

Do yourself a favor, go and talk to a registered repairer of oxy acetylene plant. He may tell you a few stories that will surprise and alarm you.
If you want budget prices, get your existing Aussie sourced gear repaired by the accredited repairer. Both cheaper and saferin the long run.We are talking about the difference between using stainless steel or brass valve seats for instance. There are standards of course but one company consistently exceeded these standards.

Having almost being involved in a court action years ago after a run between two well known companies dominant in the welding industry I take care to only speak generally.Read between these lines.

Oxy acetylene plant can be a potential bomb if mishandled or mis understood.Nuff said?

    Thanks Grahame,
That's exactly the kind of opinion I was after. I was a bit worried by the price, and no mention of flash-back screens or whatever they are called.
I'll bide my time, save my pennies and get Oz standard equipment.
    Thanks for that

Hi Watson, what Grahame says is true but Gasweld has a very good cheaper set that you can still put flashback arrestors on for about half the price. I used to run a fleet of 20plus sevice trucks and we didn't have any trouble with the Gasweld sets.

    Comet 3.

I have had mine since 1980 something, and although it is only occasionally used these days, it spent many years on site in an industrial setting and has yet to let me down. (I have replaced hoses and o-rings though, which is very normal)

There is a set on eBay at the moment

Like fossil have still got the set from the 80's and have replaced hoses and o-rings, my advice is that no matter what you get make sure you put flashback arresters at the gun on both lines , the little extra cost is worth it . I have had one go off on a ship I was on and seen the aftermath and its not pretty plus the change of undies

That's what I've got, a Harris brand kit and it cuts beautifully. Was cheaper to buy than CIG/BOC I'm pretty sure. Rent the oxy bottle but buy an LPG one to go with it. There is a wide range of tips and fittings, but not easy to find a supplier that actually carry the bits.

I just went searching, Australian links are a bit thin. http://www.harrisproductsgroup.com/equipment/ is the UK website with the full range. I bought my set from Glenfords Tool Centre in Toowoomba, however they aren't good for back-up supplies. BOC don't deal with them I don't think, so specialty welding suppliers might be better.

    Cheers,

got a new kit a week ago from boc. hoses, gauges, one cutting tip, one welding tip, googles, striker, tip cleaner and a bit of other stuff for $350.00. pretty good i thaught.

they really hit you with rent on the bottles thats why i changed to lpg only one lot of rent.
