Hi Guys,

Whilst waiting for a delivery today of a meter of 35 mm diameter EN1AL, I decided to make a new dial gauge holder ! It fits into the lathe tool block in exactly the same way as a normal lathe tool, and is intended to be used for setting work such as this steel bar central in the four jaw chuck though there are other uses.

This is the device ! A simple piece of 12 mm X 20 mm aluminium bar about 125 mm long. Its drilled 5/16" to accommodate the gauge stem. I used a length of 1.6 mm thick aluminium strip fastened to the end to operate the gauge plunger. As you can see there is a small "L" shaped piece on the strip which extends about 20 mm past the end of the gauge plunger. This was done in order to be able to get close to the chuck jaws without them fouling the gauge. The aluminium strip is secured by a pair of screws in the other end.

These pictures show the device in use. The piece of bar in the lathe four jaw chuck is a 5" long piece of the steel bar that I was waiting delivery of. Interestingly I discovered that the piece of bar actually had a lump in the middle, a little over 5 thou.
