An example of a pilot bearing is the one found in the end of crankshaft, which supports the gearbox shaft.

If you post vehicle and idler details, then we would probably have a simple answer.

    HI,
Here is a description that I found : Pilot Bearing
The pilot bearing is a ball bearing which supports the gearbox input shaft. Hence, it is essential for the clutch engagement. In case of an angular offset caused by wear, the shaft is displaced. As a consequence, the clutch might be destroyed.

The Pilot Bearing is the Bearing that goes into a Flywheel on a Car,Truck,Tractor etc and not all Cars use a Pilot Bearing.

Yes it is is unusual for a Bearing to fail in that short of time, but it does happen. I have had the experience Myself with a Brand New Idler Pulley that became noisy after a Week. I found the reason for the Noise when I lifted the Bonnet, the Grease had escaped from the Bearing. The Grease had come out where the Seal meets the outer Bearing Race caused by a faulty Seal. The Idler Pulley was replaced and no further problems occured.
Another reason that I have found why Idler Pulley Bearings have failed prematurely is because they have been fitted with the wrong Bearing type. I have found for example that 6203LU Bearings have failed prematurely, but some keep going. The best I have found is example 6203RS. It does come down to Bearing Clearance to tight of a Bearing and its bound to heat up and fail prematurely. Just My opinion.

It sounds like You're certain that You have found the problem Bearing. I would still be checking the other Bearings (A/C, Alternator, Power Steering, Water Pump and other Idler Pulleys. As tanii51 has said, but not in exact words that something else could be wrong. I have always used either a Mechanics Stethoscope or a Long Flat Screwdriver with a Plastic Handle for checking of Bearing Noise.

is it a continous noise or just intermittent

It's only intermittent, just when I touch the accelerator and sounds like a mouse squeak for half a second.

    HI,
That sounds more like a Belt noise. Does it make the Noise when You are moving along is a straight line or when Turning or just when You Rev the Vehicle up ?.
