Hi Dale,
I remember reading that tomato juice works a treat on cast iron stains.... must be one of the acids? You can then wash down with vodka.

I wonder if any mild acid would work then? Lemon juice or vinegar also.

Yep it has lactic acid in it.
BTW it's stronger than it sounds.
Tomato juice has citric, malic and ascorbic acid (vitamin C) plus a few more
I don't reckon you have a chance of getting the "stain" out.
Whatever it was it has already taken something out, or etched the surface of, the cast iron so all you can do is try to make it uniform again.
If you remember suggested vinegar in my first post on this thread. The reason I suggested to let it rust lightly is to get that uniforn layer happening across the whole table.

Don't know about CLR, but tomato juice has a mix of organic acids, citric acid, malic acid, acetic acid ( vinegar ), lactic acid and formic acid... plus others I'd guess...
Acetic acid, as in vinegar tends to leave a greyish finish on rusted steel, and different shade on hardened steels... Whatever you try, I'd make sure you can wash it down and neutralize the acid with something slightly alkaline.
