The handbook is a good idea, but I'll always remember where I did my work experience as a student - a small time marine engineering outfit where there was basically one guy building a steel trawler. Apart from transferring some great skills and trusting me with stuff I'd be nervous with even today - he presented me with a u-beaut welding helmet at the end of my time which I treasured for years.

I like the idea of a book but the only problem is that these are tending to be replaced with electronic copies of the same thing... especially with computer savy kids. I have all my technical reference books on a thumb drive.

This is a difficult one. Giving an engineering student a measuring device might be like giving an architectural student a compass. Maybe not much point. There are thirty architects including undergraduate students, a couple of draughtsmen and two interior designers at work. I'm the sole user of a compass and drawing board. The rest of them use CAD.

ps. I just mentioned this to my wife. She reckons a vernier, a mic, whatever would still be a nice gift. The bloke would be thinking that these people thought enough of me to to give me something.Last edited by Anorak Bob; 2nd March 2013 at 12:48 PM. Reason: My Wife's perspective.

I'm trying hard to find a machinery's handbook but it seems that Adelaide has been sold out since December. I may have to go the digital route. I don't think I can even scare up a CD-ROM.

another book I just thought of as I use it much more than machinerys handbook is Engineers Black Book and readily available.
