Good news. Thanks to your suggestions.

A little gentle persuasion, holding the backgear still with a wooden wedge and after several doses of penetrating spray over three weeks and the 3-jaw chuck came off this arvo. Even better, I didn't drop it on the lathe bed or the ways!!!

I will take my thread tool and vernier over tomorrow and find out what the spindle thread is. It looks about 1" 8 tpi BSW, but I will know better tomorrow. If that's the case, I suppose I will need to fabricate an adapter to put an independent jaw chuck or a faceplate on the spindle (unless I get lucky and find someone with a set of spares!!!)
    Cheers

Checked it out and it is 1" 9tpi BSW. An unusual thread (of course).

You could always just try and use the backing plate off the current 3 jaw and fit a 4 jaw to it..

You may wish to have a look at Mick Moyle's 40 Edward St Summer Hill 7998444. They have a lot of second hand lathe parts and you may find a face plate to suit or one thats close which you can adapt.

    Regards,
    Keith.

Are you sure that the spindle nose is 1"x 10 tpi? The Whitworth standard is 10 tpi and is used on pre-war Myfords. As Myford made your lathe for Tyzacks, I find it hard to imagine that they would use an oddball pitch.

You will find that 1' x 10 tpi is also a common standard used on many wood lathes. Perhaps Carbatec can help you with backplates.

In any event, Myford ML2 and ML4 and Australian made Advance lathes used this size so the chances of picking up backplates or faceplates are probably pretty good.

I'll have another look next time I am at Mum's but it did seem to be 1" x 9tpi. the BSW sandard is 1" x 8 tpi and the BSF is 1" x 10 tpi. A bob each way?
Zyto were made by several manufacturers for S Tyzack, so perhaps mine wasn't a Myford one. But the thread does seem strange at 9. If worst comes to worst, I will take RC's suggestion until I am good enough to make a couple of backplates for myself!!
    Cheers

Attached is an advertisment from Zyto on their Lathes, it says Lead Screw 8 TPI.
This maybe the same for your Lathe http://www.lathes.co.uk/zyto/

    Thanks Keith

I saw that ad before, but when it revealed itself, the thread looked finer. I did use my thread gauge, but maybe I effed up - so I will measure it again.

Also, next week I think I will go (with the one dead centre I have and the backplate now I have that to Mick Moyles and have a squiz at what they might have.
    Cheers

The lead screw is that big long threaded rod that drives the saddle, not the spindle nose..

Thanks RC - I jumped straight to the TPI without looking at which screw was mentioned.

Either way I will get the thread gauge out again and make sure when I next visit the lathe (er that is, my Mum)
    Cheers

Some more info on the Zyto - I went to the State Library this lunchtime and located the Model Engineer review of what looks like my lathe. Some interesting reading.
If you are interested, PM me and I will forward you a copy.
    Cheers

Thanks for the curt responce RC.
JMK89 sorry for the wrong info, didnt look at the advertsement properly.
    I asked Tony Griffiths from the UK forum and here is his reply;

The best bet is just to measure it - but the maker's figure for the ordinary
    Zyto was:
When the "final" version of the Zyto was announced in 1937 the centre height
had been increased to 3 .375" (33/8"), the changewheel mounting bracket
angled rearwards instead of forwards and there was a possibility that the DP
of the gears had been finer to allow a wider range of pitches to be
generated . The spindle was increased in diameter and the nose thread was
    changed from a rather inadequate ¾" by 12 t.p.i. to a slightly better 7/8"
by 9 t.p.i. The lathe was initially available with a very well designed but
complex and expensive-to-produce self-contained countershaft fastened to a
version of the cast-iron treadle stand.

Hope this is of better help to you JMK89.

    Regards,
    Keith.

Yes, Keith. Thanks for that. I will have to check the dia again but at least the 9 tpi accords with my measurement. And 7/8" x 9 tpi is a standard BSW size

    jmk89,
I was looking at some old books I have and came across this advertisment for the ZYTO Lathe so scanned the article for your interest as you have one.

    Regards,
    Keith.

Fathers Day has been and gone Jeremy,
Do you still have all your important bits intact? And if so were you suitably surprised on the Sunday morning by the awesome present your kids bought you? (Assuming you have actually told them)
