You didn't buy that one did you, I emailed the seller and he said,
HA just kidding what a good score and for for the same money as a Chinese one but probably 3 times as heavy. It will compliment the shaper nicely. What sort of condition is it in?
We want moving and up and running pictures.

Thanks guys. You know about as much as I do! He reckons everythings fine but he's no machinist, just an auction reseller. Going to see it tomorrow. Nervous as a kitten I am. It's a big gamble. I don't think there's any way I can back out of the deal.

He reckons it weighs 1.8T. If so I don't want to tow it. Says he can deliver for $200 but not for a week or two.

I was wondering if someone on here might be tempted by that one....

A dual axle trailer will do it just like your shaper.
With ebay you can always fall back on "Not as described" as it is advertised as "Excellent condition" and so what if you get a strike on ebay it's better than taking home something you don't want.

One thing to do is to wind the carriage up to the tail stock end and see how tight it is compared to the other end. If it can be powered up take it through all the gears and feeds in the range it's set for.
Maybe one of the other members down that way would come with you to help check it over?

    Hi Bryan,

Congratulations on the new addition to the family, nice to see it's going to a good home.

I was trying to remember the name of the guy who is a fan of those machines, and then it struck me... it's graziano...
I'd send him a PM and ask for a run down on what to watch out for, how to go about setting it up.

Good luck with the move, it's always a nerve wracking experience moving heavy precision machines across country.

    Regards
    Ray

Dave, trouble is it can't be powered where it is, so I won't be able to test anything till I get it home. Bit late by then.

I'm seeing listings on euro machine sites that say 1.2T. If so I'm happy to tow it. At least it's only an hour away.

Will be interesting to see what you come home with. There are a couple of ring-ins I can see. One looks like the center holder from a dividing head, to the left of it I assume are a pile of change gears, whats to the left of them? sort of looks like the rotary base for a vice but not.

$200 and a slab if he gets it there by Friday

Looks like the vise for it is on the right of the first picture.
    Bryan,
If he doesn't know what he is talking about grab what you can you might score the vise and more.

I am pleased that someone from this forum bought that machine. If I was still looking for a lathe I would have beat you to that one-good luck with it.

Inspected the machine today. I can't find a thing wrong with it. Yes it has some wear. The carriage and cross-slides both firm up near the end of their travels. The cross slide nut has a fair bit of backlash. Big deal. It shows every sign of being cared for. Recent lubrication on the ways, clean oils in all the sight glasses. A nice oily grime all over. No rust. All levers feel smooth and positive. Spindle turns freely. But I won't stop quietly pooping myself till I can test it properly under power. I'm picking it up in the morning.

One of the first challenges is to raise it by about 400mm. I'm 6' 5", and this thing is made for hobbits. I don't think fabricated steel is going to cut it. I'm thinking of casting a pair of concrete blocks to sit it on. They could be grouted to the floor and moved later if need be.

Then I have to completely rethink my new shed layout. Actually a new lathe is not really what the doctor ordered right now. The doctor had other things in mind. Oh well. As I said to 'er indoors: too rare, too nice, too close, too cheap. I told her it's the Armani of lathes. She liked that.

When you get Giorgio home see if you can raise it up on about six inches of timber first...a 200mm base might be too high. I am 6' 5 1/4" and I am planning a pair of 5" concrete curbs under the lathe, custom cast in place. I plan to build a four-sided ply form on a plastic sheet. The concrete will key to but be separate from the floor where poured. I don't know what I'll do if I have to move it unless I try to prestress the re-rod somehow and then relieve the middle somehow.

Great news so far Bryan. Its amazing what a few $K swinging through the air will do for the heart rate and the "unknown". Thats how my mill and shaper came home. Repeat after me "I hope its not a pile of ####"
