    Hi Dave,
The arm link bearings are ok, they are just plain bored cast with a hardened pin. Probably 1/2 thou play. The main flywheel bearing is beautiful, mind you its is about 12" long and 5" dia.....the sliding bearing for the stroke is adjustable via the 3 bolts you can see on the arm. The middle one pushes and the outer ones pull. I was a bit skeptical that they would have any effect on such a large casting, but they snugged up a couple of thou no worries. Mind you they are 3/4" bolts. I think the smallest socket/spanner i used tonight was 5/8. It is unbelievable just how BIG everything is.

Being a social outcast i often carry jokes on well after they are funny.....i'll stop with the team thing now. My wife and a friend where talking yesterday and i overheard her say "he makes a hermit look like a social butterfly". Oh well, we all have our good points....

I guess I will have to put my hand up as a member of the social outcast club as well. The less I have to do with crowds the better. Bugga the high pressure/stress life; peace, quiet and solitude for me these days.

My "team" has just spent the last 3 hours or so putting the flywheel, arm and ram back on. She still needs another coat of paint, but i'm glad i left it till after i put her innards in as i did damage some paint around the door opening putting the flywheel in (through some cloth mind you)

Arm and linkage weighs about 90-100kg....

Once again, not bad for a video off my phone....Amazingly the fast return can easily be seen with a stroke of only 6"

    #### me, I had no idea the shaper was that big! I bet you're champing at the bit to see it cutting. Nice work Ewan.

Yeah, she surprised me a bit too when i first saw her......She is actually of a similar build to Blondie, they look like 2 regular sized machines until you compare them to something smaller......
You are right of course i can't wait, just need to get past mothers day and then i get my shed back and i can finish her. Sounds easy when i put it like that.
I need to make 2 new bearings, fix the clutch, clean the gearbox and motor, then the knee and table, put in lots of oilers, and get the electrician to wire her up. Oh, and sort out the VERY stuck gib adjuster bolt in the head....I think thats all. It wouldn't be so bad except i need the crane to move nearly every part, which takes up lots of time. When i first saw Dave J's gantry crane i though "that would be nice, but i don't need one". I can see now i was soooooo wrong.

    Hi,
I got one of the 2 new bearings done today. It took a lot longer than it should have as i thought i had better check my lathe was cutting parallel first, which of course it wasn't, so i spent some time adjusting the head back and forth before i got it right.
The bearing is LG2 leaded bronze, it's kinda funny to turn, comes of in chips, grabs real easy even with a tool with no rake, and takes more HP to cut than steel. I know a similar sized piece of steel i can take a DOC of 1.5mm, but in the LG2 .5 was about the limit, otherwise the machine slowed down till i bailed out. The surprise came when i parted it off, it parted like it was butter, long shavings and no chatter whatsoever. Now i just need to make the other one and cut some oil holes and grooves.

    Ewan

I also took this rather boring vid of a cut

Hi Ewan here are the two types I am going to make. One is machined from a piece of hex bar and couldn't be simpler. I only have a lathe so it is probably going to be my preferred wick feeder.

Looking good, at least it's some progress Have you got your shed back now after the flowers?
1.5mm DOC in steel my 12 x 36 Chinese lathe can do 3mm maybe more with HSS and I always do around 2mm plus when roughing steel, is your lathe under power in the motor department?

Thats at that same speed 450, if i slow her down a bit i can go to 3mm no worries. I only have a "real" half a horse to play with (old GE motor) The bronze really took some power though, not really sure why. I also need to spend some time on the bearings, they are a bit finicky at the moment, depending on how warm they are....

Yes i have my shed back...give me a tic i'll post a scary pic of what happens if SWMBO gets into your shed.

    Looks pretty in there.
So no one complained about rusty flowers? LOL

You need to get a bigger motor for that lathe, it would take you a lot of extra time doing cuts like that in steel.
I just like to get it off as quick as possible in roughing passes, and when I hear the lathe motor really starting to load up I know I am at it's limits and just stay under that a little.
