    Bryan,
thanks for looking. Cateye make a cheap cycle computer that goes up to 299KPH. It's called the Velo 5 and I've seen it advertised in Oz for $30. I'll buy one and have a play with it.

    Mike,
When I tried my current bike computer on my Hercus 260 I was also getting readings that were higher than the chart was suggesting.

Some cheaper computers also have a direct RPM function so you don't even need to program in a false wheel diameter to get the correct reading...

Simon, it doesn't specify but I doubt the rpm function would read high enough to be of any use on a lathe.

Thats what I was wondering, and if you ask a question I doubt you get a strait answer.
Still you never know and if not, it could always be programed the other way with wheel diameter and it's only $6.

My handheld tacho arrived yesterday (8 days after I ordered it). It's the one KevM posted the link to in post #3. It's fantastic. At $14 delivered to your door, you'd be mad not to own at least one. It comes with 3 lengths of reflective tape. I stuck a short piece to the chucks on my lathe and pedestal drill and it works perfectly.

I also ordered a Cateye cycle computer which I hope to use as a permanent tacho on the lathe. If I'd known how good the handheld unit is I wouldn't have bothered. Too late now.
