Default Handy Threading tool for the lathe

Here's a handy tool I made some time ago, unfortunately it's MT2 and my new lathe is MT3 so I have to use an adapter for now. It's handy for hand threading or just finishing off: The tapered end fits in the tailstock, the die holder slides over the protruding end and a die fits in the end of the die holder.
The last pic is of a very technical item that some may not have cottoned onto yet: A motorized workshop broom

    Nice Job!
I must make myself one of those.
I take it the handle clears the lathe bed?

    Hi,
    Nice tool

I hate to sound like a broken record, but Harold Halls lathe book includes a similar project

Ueee, there is a thread on the forum called: "What have you invented", this isn't it. I never claimed to have invented the tool, I simply started a new thread to show a handy accessory I made some time ago. I thought perhaps someone who hadn't seen it before might also find it handy.

Nice tool and looks good. Have you thought about an attachment for larger dies or do you think they would be to big for this unit?

The only reason I ask is I have been wanting to make one of these up myself for many years but like Bob have never got around to it.
You might have seen the MT arbours I posted up a while back with centre drills in them, well one of the spares is for one of these, when I get around to it. LOL

    Sorry tongleh,
I was not trying to offend you in any way, just once again pointing out for the for the $15 or less these books are really worth it. I didn't say you had invented it, actually, all i said was nice tool......

I was thinking of making mine on the larger size so that it could ten take a series of insert to fit different size dies.

I bought my die holder from Little Machine Shop, but made an adapter to take 1 1/2" dies for it.

Here's another version of the same idea.

The double ended die holder takes some smaller BA dies one end, can't remember the diameter, and 1" button dies in the larger end. The larger die holder takes 1 1/2" dies. I didn't bother making one for 2" dies - I think it is easier to screwcut the threads covered by these dies directly with the lathe then if necessary, clean them up with a die afterwards. I occasionally do this to get the correct finished profile on Whitworth threads.

the 3MT and 2 MT mounts for the die holders which fit the tailstocks of the two lathes have identical sized shanks and take either of the die holders, and the chuck for small taps, which is OK for taps up to about 8 mm in steel, and will start bigger taps true. The tap holder at the bottom left which was made specially for a larger tap which the chuck would not hold without spinning on the tap shank is mounted on an arbor which can be held in the drill press chuck, and has the same sized shank as the ones on the two MT arbors, so the chuck for tapping can be used on the drill press also.

I just found these for sale on Chronos. Probably not as nicely made as those shown above, but would do the job:
