hares & forbes coolant pumps?
As most would know hares & forbes have there sale on at the moment and they are selling 240v 1/8hp coolant pumps for $99, any issues at all with these pumps, is it a good deal?
I'm thinking of grabbing one for my little sheraton lathe.
Thanks

Well if they are the same pump that they intall into their lathes you should not have a problem.
The pump in my AL340 has never missed a beat in the few years I have had it.
And $99 is quite cheap considering the catalogue price.Warning Disclaimer

I bought the metal tank kit one off them 3-4 years ago to put on my lathe but it only made it to the bandsaw. The other week I went to use it after a long spell and it just hummed and I found it had rusted up a bit from condensation off the coolant. I took the base off gave the impeller a few turn and it ran fine again. It looks to be the same as the one on the mill and I have never had trouble with them.
Retromilling said that his one of his mill died, but I am not sure what happened to it.
I would say at $99 it's a good buy and I think all the supplier have the same one's.

Yeah I might just buy one and fabricate a metal tank to suit. I've seen people use pond or parts washer pumps but for $99 might as well have the real thing.

Make sure you get the longer of the two pumps. The one listed as 130mm has the intake to the impeller on the top of the housing which makes the maximum depth of coolant the pump will use is only 105mm. The "150mm" model will give you the extra 20mm, which can be very handy if you are using full flow and the drainage back to the tank is slow.

Thanks for the heads up, I will check it out.
The one listed in my 2009 catalog is 130mm, the one listed on there website is advertised as 150mm but in the specifications it says 130mm??

The pick up on these pumps is right at the bottom (at least the ones I have are). They have a triangle piece of sheet metal with a hole in the center that holds a fine screen. It looks like only the 415 ones come in 2 depths.
I would go for a plastic tank because the steel one I have is starting to rust.

It wouldn't suprise me if the chinese didn't paint the inside of there tanks. I suppose if I find a plastic container with lid that fits in my cabinet it would be easy going,

The tank was painted inside but it only takes the paint to flake a little and it starts to rust or the paint flaking. I don't think any paint would stand up to having water soaking in it, even powder coating comes off over the years. The water also evaporates from the coolant and creates condensation.
When I bought mine they had a pallet on special for $199, I wish I had of put the extra $50-60 to it and bought the plastic one and it also came with a magnetic switch.

I'd reckon a lot of boats would probably disagree there Dave Use the right type of paint and it will be fine, a lot of tanks in various applications have coatings of different descriptions applied. Having said that, I agree, unless you need to fabricate a tank to fit a space, plastic seems like a better solution. Alternatively mine is stainless, so if you're happy fabricating in that, it's possibly a solution ... excuse the pun

Com,
I think Hare and Forbes are still selling three coolant pumps from the same manufacturer; two are the 240VAC, 130 and 150 mm tail, and one 415VAC with 180mm tail. Check their website. www.machineryhouse.com.au.
Regarding rust.
Rust will depend on the coolant you are using. Some coolants will rust if left lying on a metal surface. Others don't. I am now using a synthetic coolant Callington Ultra Synthet 971, which claims to prevent rust. I have been using it over the last six months in my mill and it doe not rust.. I leave the mill overnight and in the morning the water has evaporated and there is a thin "oily" residue (by feel). I don't bother to wipe the bare metal with any additional rust preventative. Check out their website www.callingtonhaven.com. They are in Rydalmere Sydney and it seems to be their own product. Also I found that there was no odour even after being left unused for about 3 months, nor any sludge "growing" on the surface. Furthermore, it has not attacked the paint on the tank (don't know what the paint is).
I was using LubeAlloy (made in Queanbeyan near Canberra, but it would develop a sludge, possibly reacting with the tramp oil. It did not rust either. But I admit Canberra rarely experiences high humidity.

PS. No, I have no connection to Callington. Their coolant was recommened to me by a small machinery house here in Canberra.

I will head up there tomorrow so will see what is available, hopefully they haven't sold out.
Thats good news about the coolant, the stuff they use at work stinks, when using the saws and you pick up the material afterwards, you cant get the smell off your hands without washing.
Any idea off the top of your head what it is worth?
Thanks

Hiyall,
I bought one a couple of years ago and it hasn't missed a beat. But then again I have never used it. I hope I don't ever need to.

Unless I am reading it wrong, I think you have the pumps the wrong way around.
Scroll down the page a bit and it shows all 3 and the 150mm ones turn into 130mm?
They have one 240v 130mm, 20ltrs/min
https://www.machineryhouse.com.au/Pr...stockCode=P232
The others are 415v 130mm, 20ltrs/min
https://www.machineryhouse.com.au/Pr...stockCode=P233
and the 415v 180mm, 60ltrs/min
https://www.machineryhouse.com.au/Pr...stockCode=P230
That coolant sounds to good, are you sure you don't work their. LOL
I will be up for some coolant in the next few months I might give them a try. What are the prices like?
I find with the H&F's coolant I am using, the water separates from the coolant because I find condensation under the lid when I lift it sometimes. Also if left on the table or something I find it separates and causes rust.
Russell
That pump should last forever. LOL

Thanks for the heads up on that coolant Bevin, sounds just about perfect! My pump is still 3 phase, and it needs to be changed to single phase but I'm still debating whether to bother. Do you have any idea what size containers are available?
