    We will meet.
I have been reading so much about the last scraping group that I think I would like to go to the next one.
There was a lot of talk about Ubeaut scraper models that maybe I should come up to speed with.
The scraper I use was the one I have always had, made from an old file with all the teeth ground off. I hardened the end to pretty well "Glass Hard" (no tempering) & it has worked well. Just an occasional hone while scraping & it continues on.

I don't even know what a jig borer does but they sure look a nice bit of kit

    Hi Bruce,
I also wondered what a jig borer would think about being used as a mill???

I thought the same thing about this one.
Jones & Shipman 540 Surface Grinder | eBay
but "Hydraulic feed is slow (may need oil change)"
As my memory says the table slides use the same oil I decided to pass.

    Welder,
As I understand it jig borers are for drilling(boring?) very accurate hole patterns(not milling). They have more accurate screws and more accurate ways of setting them than a mill. But I could be wrong.

The main thing that stopped me from bidding on the Hauser Jig Borer was that it looked like it had been used as a mill. Jig Borers are precision accurate machines designed for drilling & boring holes in predetermined & extremely accurate locations, not for taking heavy thrust cuts as in a milling machine. The screw threads on the Jig Borer may have been damaged. The other item was the Hauser Jig Borer that was for sale had grease nipples in the head to replace the original oil nipples, not good.
Regarding the Jones & Shipman Surface Grinder (English Made) a very good & precise machine but this particular one looked like it had been abused. The guard around the grinding wheel had been removed. The table sluggish movement would have put me off.
I think you did well to avoid it.
Ideally it would be best to try out a surface grinder before purchasing, to ensure the main bearings were still in good nick & all was operating well.
    regards

    Bruce,

I have replaced a number of the original nipples on my 13 with conventional grease nipples simply because the pom pom oiler I use makes a better connection. I understand your concern, most people see the nipple and think grease. I have had to deal with that assumption and the damage caused by it on the little No.O mill.

Same thing on my Churchill Surface grinder, there are a few grease type nipples on it but I use a Pom Pom type oiler, & the oiler does make better connection.
Getting back to the Hauser Jig Borer on E Bay, I was just uncertain about the grease nipples & it was probably the thing that turned me off.
I was probably too careful because at $800 things may have been restorable, but still I am glad I did not buy it. I can recall only being permitted to use "DTE Light" in the Hauser, but then that seemed to be the oil used in most of the Toolroom machines.
I do not want to start another episode on oils, so wont go any further.
I can recall the problems you had with your Hercus O mill where someone had used grease in the past.
Been working in wood all morning with the grandkids, making teapot stands with halved joints..The 12 yr old boy wants to to set up a proper shed when he gets home with plenty of tools, so I dont know what Ive started.
Also got him to read a book "Blokes & Sheds" he is pretty well hooked.
    regards
    Bruce
