    Hi,

I hate to show my ignorance, but what do you do with a rare earth magnet? Are they any different to a normal magnet?

I not sure the use but I am pretty sure rare earth magnets are more " powerful" than a normal magnet.

Here are a few I can think of.
Hold the dust collection bag onto your DC while you clamp down that crappy clip.
Stick one in the bottom of a sealed PVC pipe to use as a magnetic broom.
Hold pieces of steel in place while they are welded together
Hold a long (60") chainsaw bar horizontal on a chainsaw mill.
As metal chip filter in a coolant tank on a metalwork lathe
To one handed start flat head nails.

Just to add to that, one of the best tricks someone taught me with a magnet was to slip one in your pocket, that way if you are using lots of one size screw you can just whack a handful on the outside of your pocket.

As welder said, they're much stronger. Even ones the size of a $2 coin are capable of giving you a nice little blood blister if you're careless with them, they are rated at a bit over 4kg of pulling power.

The one that holds my chainsaw bar horizontal can lift 15kg.

Another use is if you have to start a screw inside a large hole just stick the magnet to the screw driver or allen key and then attach the screw to that. That works with a regular magnet but one can only hold small screws, with the REE mags I used it to start 10 x 75 mm allen bolts.
