Help!!!
Hi all you metal working people. I have a small problem that one of you may be able to help with.
I have an electric motor with a 14mm shaft. I need to expand the diameter of the shaft to15.816mm to match the OD of a piece of allthread.
I'm presuming a sleeve that fits over the shaft would be the best way to do this either one that is split to make it fit or one that is sweated on to the shaft so it shrinks when cold to the right size. I was thinking a split sleeve would be the best and most practical for me and if it works it means I can probably get another couple of these motors and fit the sleeves to each.
Little explanation:
The motors are used for mixing our molten wax, shellac, etc and have a piece of stainless all thread attached to the shaft by way of hydraulic hose and some really good clips. this enables the long allthread shaft with a propeller on the end to flex and run with the vortex of the mixture rather than being a solid fixing that would tear the motor apart. (been there tried that)
Dimensions:
ID 14mm - OD 16mm - Length 28mm slit 1mm to 1.5mm (not all that fussed)
Cheers - Neil
PS I need it in Geelong by the day before yesterday. But prepared to wait until the day after.
More than happy to throw money at it to get something that does the job.

Neil ,
I'm in Boomtown so Australia Post will be the fly in the ointment. A simpler way of installing the sleeve might be to use Loctite. No slitting required. If no one closer puts his hand up I'm happy to furnish you with a sleeve.
Bob.

Can't say I'm sure exactly what you are trying to do. (The sleeve goes in one end the of the hydraulic hose and is clamped to the motor shaft?) So I have no idea if it will work. But if all you need is a sleeve ID 14mm - OD 16mm - Length 28mm slit 1mm to 1.5mm in S/S I should be able to do that.
To late for the post tonight but I should be at least a couple of days closer than BT.

Have you tried just slitting the hose and using two clamps?

Easier to turn down the end of the allthread to match the shaft - assuming tube is available in that size. Heck you could do it by eye with a grinder or file. Should be close to the minor diameter of the thread.

Hi Neil,
Probably a moot point now but as luck would have it, I have the day off tomorrow and I could machine one up for you and drive to Geelong before lunch.

Thank you all for the suggestions and offers of help.
Going with Steamwhisperer/Phil's offer if it's still available. Need it really fast so that looks like the best and fastest option.

All done and delivered.
It was only after I finished that I thought of some pics as I used HSS in the diamond turning tool to machine the stainless.
Yeah yeah, I know, no pics then it didn't happen
The HSS required only one sharpening and that was because it was blunt to start with
I used some one inch bar and machined it down to 16mm and for the helluvit made one with an OD of 15.80 as well.
Fingers crossed they hang on to the motor shaft long enough for me to leave the country.

Thanks for delivering them yesterday Phil. Nice to have a bit of a chat and discover your Sovereign Hill connection as had I in the past. Used to do the carvings for Steinfelds Furniture many years ago and often spent Easter and Christmas down there as a working wood turner and carver. As I said yesterday I often used to have lunch in the steam room or battery where I could sit and watch the steam driven motors in action.
Anyway.... Lockted and clamped 15.8mm sleeve onto the motor shaft after you left. Attached the beater bit to the shaft and ran it all night without a problem.
Great job and a bit of a godsend as we can now proceed with production at almost double speed. Will get another motor next week and triple production with the second (16mm) sleeve you made for me.
Thanks again for a job well done and the speedy delivery.
Cheers - Neil
