HELP with tap sizes!
Hi all,
I bought some brass screws from Bunnings today for a project I am working on, in a 5/32. Now, knowing next to bugger all about threads and thread pitches, etc can someone tell me what this means :
5/32" W32
I understand that the thread is 5/32", but what does the W32 mean?
Cheers.

ElDubya,
5/32W is 5/32" Whitworth thread, 32 TPI. It used to be very common for things like drawer pulls etc. Thinking a long way back, I seem to remember it was also used on the spokes on the wire wheels on the old Austin 7 cars. 3/32.W, 5/32W and 7/32W threads were all fairly common for small screws years ago, but 5/32 seems to be the only one which survived in common use until recently.

In this case the w32 means whitworth but a lot of brass nuts and bolts have a standard of 26tpi.
Next time you are near an industrial supplies shop get yourself a Tap and drill chart. Often free if you are buying something else, and it will give you all of the different sizes and threads available. Bunnings wont stock most of them.

Ahh, excellent stuff fellers, thanks very much. I am going in search of a tap tomorrow for these screws, so I shall hit them up for a thread chart as well
