its not too hard Bob look for a motor with the same base plate number and similar rpm1440rpm) and check to se if the shaft size is the same . You may have to change the switches some of the contactors cannot be made to work on 240v, open the box and see if the peice of paper inside says it can ( the relay needs to operate on 240 volt) i think mal from Australian Metalworking Hobbyist has replacement single phase motors .
if you get a motor that is reversable you will need a reversing switch
i would go for a vsd/ vfd and use your existing motor they can be had now for less than the cost of a new motor and you have variable speed / reverse/ jog and a host of other things all built in

Thanks Tanii. Food for thought - Just saw a 415v one in the trading post and the question sprang to mind. The motor would not be the problem (I have stacks of the things) I was mainly concerned with the torque.

Torque wont really be a problem depending on the size of the motor.

If you are thinking of doing reasonable roughing cuts I would look towards a 1hp motor,I think standard they came with a 1/2 hp 415,maybe 3/4 hp.

If you do go with a bigger motor and if that motor is larger physically than the one you have now you may need to do some slight modifications to the housings/guards for adequate clearance.

Pipeclay - That was pretty much what I was thinking. That or run a 1/2 horsepower motor through a gear system of sorts.

My two have one of each..... The older one 1/2hp and the newer one, 3/4 hp.... Probably because the newer one has a chinese motor, and their horses are not quite as big...

RC, don't let the Chinese read your post they will wack their endmill prices up and cost me a fortune!

As pipeclay sez i used a seimens .75kw had to modify the base mounts a bit and cut out a little off the mounting frame ( if you get a vfd you may have to up the amps rating in the parameters to say 4 or 5 amps to stop it shutting down) it worked for me
