Herless Lathe Headstock Bearings
Hi everyone.
I have a chance to purchase a used herless lathe at a pretty decent price. However Ive been informed that one headstock bearings are loose on the spindle shaft and rotate with it.
Unfortunately the guy selling it couldnt really say any more than that as he was merely repeating what the tech had told him.
I've seen it in person and for the most part, the rest of it is in reasonably good condition.
This is the lathe in question, he's asking $600
I might take a look at it tonight and see if I can see it running
What would you do?
Does anyone know what new bearings for a lathe like this might cost? Even at $1000 I feel like im still ahead.
Thanks
Zac

Take a set of metric allen keys and a torch. The cover where the 4 jaw chuck is sitting will come off just with a hand full of bolts. You probably will be able to see the bearing in question.
Worst case if it is spinning on the spindle, it could have taken down the bearing journal. That's a chrome and grind job. Not hard to spend money on.
Regards Phil.

G'Day Zac,
I shouldn't have to say this, but for god's sake don't start the lathe with this cover off or you will throw a fountain of oil in a perfect arc, (don't ask me how I know this).

Martin

Well.......
Hi
Its just my humble opinion, but I wouldn't like to buy a lathe with spindle bearing problems as described. As you are fairly close to the big smoke, you will have ample opportunities to peruse the market for a lathe . There seems to be plenty of pre-loved lathes around ATM . Mike

LOL. I should have mentioned that. Martin has me cold. Lowest couple of speeds are probably O.K, but the input shaft is still at speed.
Really, really watch your pinkies if you do that. You might be able to see the offending bearing just by rolling the spindle over by hand. Make sure the E.Stop is in or power cut.
I'm on my third Lisle Stetoscope. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/like/321368757290?
Only written 1 off, I keep one in the van and one at the shop. The third one, I managed to catch a mesh, and put the aluminium probe straight though a gear set. Its only coupled by surgical tube, so it just pulled out.
Regards Phil.
