HM50/52 Y way covers
Hi,
Today i started a rather spontaneous clean of my mill. It started with a simple coolant change/clean and grew from there......
The one thing that has always annoyed me about my machine is the poxy concertina guard behind the table covering the Y ways. I have noticed that some of the other HM50/52's have a better looking "flap" guard for want of a better description. I know Dave J's mill also has a similar guard on the front of the table, not sure if it was factory or not.
When i pulled the concertine guard off my fears where realized: the guard had made sure any chips that got under it stayed there and where kept from my view.
Can anyone shed some light onto how these flappy guards are fixed and what they are made from?

Ueee
I have a smaller mill then your but my solution might help you out.
After I cnc my mill the original covers would not fit back on and as you found out there where next to useless anyway.
My solution was to uses some thin plastic (recycled a large art carry folder). Hung a piece from the head down over the z slide and attached another to the back of the saddle that flexes from horizontal to the vertical and goes behind the one hanging from the head. These are quite wide and stop the swarf and coolant getting on the y or z slide.
Hope you can follow what I have done. If you do not or what any more info I can take some photos and post them.

Hi Ewan,
This cover below has been fine for around 5-6 years now. I made it up from some upholstery vinyl I had laying around and as the pictures show the rear one slips under the way wiper and the front one uses the wiper screws because it's easy to get to.
At the top of the column I had it bolted on the first mill, but haven't got around to it on this one so it just hooks on using the socket head bolts.
I found with the rear one slipping under the wiper made it easy for cleaning because you only have to undo the wiper screws a little to get it off.
I recently bought some rubber to replace it but found the 3mm is to thick. If you go rubber which is a good idea in case you drop something I would recommend 1.5mm rubber sheet.
The first and second mill I received had the accordion cover so I made up a way wiper for it to fit this cover, this mill come with no accordion and already had a way wiper on it. The wipers are easy enough bent up out of sheet metal in the vise. Just take the front one off and copy it.

Hi Ewan,
I'm in the process of doing the same thing.
I recently bought a couple of sheets of this stuff:
1mm THICK RUBBER BLACK NITRILE SHEET 640mm x 320mm | eBay
Very reasonably priced including delivery. The sheet sizes worked out about perfect for my needs. it's only 1mm not 1.5mm which would be better but it seems very good quality, very smooth and flexible and looks like it won't crack which it what happened with what my mill came with.
Cheers,
Simon

Clark rubber has the 1.5mm stuff and its about $50 mtr, but you only need 1/2 mtr.

Thanks guys,
that should be easy enough. Dave what did you use in your new wiper? I just used 4 layers of felt for Freddie but the stuff they use on the mills is more squashable and seems to press against the way very well when you tighten the bolts.
Edit, I just found this on ebay http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/South-Ben...item19d23e3c08 looks like the ticket only its not big enough to do in one piece.
Edit 2....just found this thread from a while back....https://www.woodworkforums.com/f65/en...g-felt-107811/1915 17"x50" LeBlond heavy duty Lathe, 24" Queen city shaper, 1970's G Vernier FV.3.TO Universal Mill, 1958 Blohm HFS 6 surface grinder, 1942 Rivett 715 Lathe, 14"x40" Antrac Lathe, Startrite H225 Bandsaw, 1949 Hercus Camelback Drill press, 1947 Holbrook C10 Lathe.

On the first mill I just cut up some removelest blanket I had here and it worked fine. Like I said the new mill can with a wiper so I just left it there.
It will only need to be on the ends if you cant find something long enough because it touches nothing in the centre.
