    Default How was this made?

    Hi all,

I was given this steel planter as a gift. I love the thing and am considering getting some more made to sell in my shop..

I'm a garden person rather than a metal person and so was hoping someone here might be able to spread some light on the methods/processes required to make such beautiful joins!

Does it require a special machine to create those curved corners?

It looks to me as though the edges have been sanded/ground down to make them smooth as well...

    cheers - potty

    Hi potty,
I assume you mean the four inside corners?
I cant really tell from the picture what sort of radius they have.
It was most likely made in 3 pieces. One U (bottom and two sides) and two sides. With a MIG welder you can get a pretty big radius on an internal corner. Then a lot of grinding.
Of course there are other ways to make bigger radius but they will add to the cost.

Top could be square tube and then made as suggested above.

    Could be done.
    But
    1. You need a very large folder (or a magna bend)
    2. lots of scrap(more than 45%)
    3. Some way of cutting out the notches
You would save a two welds though.

The 3rd photo - is that a weld seam running horizontally just below the top of the left hand side? Not quite sure why that would be there if it was fully folded.

i don't think thats a weld, looks more like an line created by wear or an impact.

    Hi All,

It's hard to guess the size, but, going by the leaves and flowers, I'd guess 6" square or so, and I think that top would be pressed, if it was a alloy suited to deep drawing, you could press the whole thing, run a trimming cutter around the inside lip, and just fold/roll a seam on the bottom. No welding or grinding.

I'd like to see a picture of the inside, if it's welded that's where you would see it more clearly.

Probably get them made in China for 50 cents each. Rusty patina comes for free...

    Regards

lol I was thinking it was at least 3 times that big.
I take back everything I said if Ray has the size right

I would build it like below, which is the the way it might have been built of a sheety.
The bottom would go in before welding it up from the inside and rest on the bottom fold.

I go with Daves' method , it's the quickest and least wasteful ,just need a segmented bender to do it.
