Impeller for coolant pump - Am I dreaming?
Hi
I have a coolant pump for my 20 year old Taiwanese mill in perfect running order that is in need of a new impeller. Old impeller has managed to pretty much dissolve. Am I being completely naive to think parts might be findable/available/modifiable or should I just order the new $240 pump and be done with it?
FWIW- Shaft 10mm, Impeller dia- approx. 72mm, depth- approx 18mm, bottom pickup.
regards

Hi Bang,
The impellers on these coolant pumps are not exactly high tech. Depending on your capabilities, I would imagine you could make a new one reasonably easy by copying the basic design from an image.426 × 389 - taffmeisters.co.uk For example.
Whether or not you wanted to do that is another matter. Finding an identical impeller S/H or new to fit your coolant pump would be like finding a needle in a haystack!
Finding an already stuffed or burnt out coolant pump or "not working parts only" on ebay may be a little more possible. Otherwise, lash out and pay for a new one but I doubt they make them as well as your one for that price!
Edit: the image attached is a mere example. You could make your impeller vanes straight and it would still work.
SimonGirl, I don't wanna know about your mild-mannered alter ego or anything like that." I mean, you tell me you're, uh, super-mega-ultra-lightning babe? That's all right with me. I'm good. I'm good.

In keeping with Simons' suggestion, you could try the local recyclers for an old car engine waterpump. If you take your shaft measurements, and impeller diameter, I think it quite likely that you will find something which can be fitted, perhaps with some minor modification. If you tell the wrecker that all you need is the impeller, even a pump with stuffed bearings or seals could yield a suitable impeller, and even a brand new one from the likes of Super Cheap or Repco would be pretty cheap compared to a new coolant pump from H&F. If you take you own calipers you could perhaps check out their stock range to find the most suitable donor candidate. Good luck,
Rob.
PS. Wreckers often charge quite different rates for something you need, and something which you would find handy. For example a rear axle for a Kingswood will cost less if all you want it for is to anchor pet goat, compared to what they want if you just busted one in the old ute. So an impeller for your coolant pump could even be free, and if not free, just a couple of bucks.

I have a coolant pump that looks identical - more or less - but is smaller. It just has a simple cross in brass or bronze about 5mm thick. That's probably all you need too.
Cheers,
Joe

Water pump from a wreckers recycle bin in hand, Subaru no less. Will fit nicely with little machining. Another 100 or so available if I don't get it the first time
Will post results
