India: Scrap metal heaven
Tomorrow is my last day in India and I finally have time to write a post.....
I travelled here with a 32kg tool trolley to build some special machinery with an Indian school. We built a large steel table with a 1.2m wide simple sheet metal folder on one end and then a sort of large horizontal axis drum type washer drier for herbal material. I've been flat out collecting the materials all over the place and found scrap metal heaven in Bangalore: a whole city block with nothing but second-hand machinery and metal.
Amazingly good prices and very helpful and friendly people. They'd bend over backwards to help you find what you are looking for. It seems no whit person ever foe there and the whole street stopped, stared and then clapped and laughed when I picked up an end of a length heavy 4"x4"x1/2" angle iron I bought and helped carry it to the cutting 'shop' a few doors away.... I've had a great time!
I'll post more when I get home in about a week.
Cheers,
Joe

Oh&s
Love the Japanese safety boots on the workers, and the invisible welding goggles on the guy using the cutting torch.
Might be a business opportunity up there opening a safety equipment supply shop?
As you say, a great place for sourcing materials for metal based projects.
Enjoy the rest of your stay,
Alan...Last edited by Uncle Al; 15th June 2015 at 09:13 AM. Reason: Minor typo

Good on you Joe for trying to make a difference.
Re poking fun at the Indian work practices, don't forget it was little different in the West a generation or 2 ago. Just saying. Nice looking work with the oxy torch.

Thanks for posting Joe!
Looks like your kicking goals with the project.
SimonGirl, I don't wanna know about your mild-mannered alter ego or anything like that." I mean, you tell me you're, uh, super-mega-ultra-lightning babe? That's all right with me. I'm good. I'm good.

The guy on the Oxy is doing pretty well with his layout to minimize waste as well as the cutting accuracy. Interesting place. Better than shopping malls, and shoe shops

I will never be the person who has everything, not when someone keeps inventing so much cool new stuff to buy.
From an early age my father taught me to wear welding gloves . "Its not to protect your hands son, its to put out the fire when u set yourself alight".
