quick post. seems the crossfeed nut was a press fit(its out but I'll look again later). I think getting it out was the easy part, no idea how I'm going to press it back in.
The knee is all off now, good news on the "crack" there is another one just like it on the other side. lol

Thats a crack up Stuart.lol
It makes me remember when the earth quake hit here and the engineer was looking at the piers and chimney at our house. I asked him how he could tell if it was earth quake related or mines settlement. His reply was an earth quake crack goes from big to small and the settlement cracks go from small to big. I wish I could get payed like him to be that intelligent.
If there is a crack in the same spot on the other side it makes you wonder why they would be their.

I'm at a loss to explain the "cracks". Surely no one would scribe lines on a way!! I'll give it a good clean tomorrow and have another look. I feel I have lots of cleaning in my future.

Damn Dve how big is it?
I think the paint on mine will come up ok so I might pull the rocker and bull gear out to have a good clean/look and then leave it at that. Have to work out what oils/greases I need. Oh and maybe change the gear box oil. Although I doubt I'll be putting to many hours on this thing....... you never know.

I used green scourer pads that you use in the kitchen for dishes, sprayed with my 80% kero 20% motor oil mix to clean my ways etc of mine. You can buy them cheap in a 10-12 pack from the supermarket.
I use them all the time with the kero/oil mix sprayed on them to clean any surface rust off tooling and machines, they work great and don't leave any deep scratches.
The kero mix on it's own I use to spray machinery and tooling to keep the rust off,. It works good as the kero spreads the oil when sprayed on, then it evaporates to leave a thin film of oil .

Hi Dave,
I would just like to reinforce what you said, for others in the group. I have recently moved to a house near the sea & rust has become quite a problem. I now also use the 80/20 kero/oil mix & have no rust problems at all. I have even sprayed all my steel offcuts & bar ends. I was concerned at first as to whether the seal in a spray bottle would swell up with the petroleum, but I used an empty window clean bottle (blue liquid one) & after about 4 months everything is still fine. I keep a rag damp with the mix, hanging on the surface grinder handle & just wipe things now & again.

Sounds like a trip to the kitchen is in order. I just use dirty kero that I let settle. I like your idea better.

Hi Ian,
Good to hear it works near the sea as well. I am about 5-10km away from the lake but we don't get the sea air here.
Stuart
I buy the standard 20-50 motor oil when it's on a good sale at super cheap or Kmart etc. One oil bottle will last years, but I am yet to find cheap or bulk kero around here. The last lot I got was from the Golo store for $5 for 4ltr's, so I bought up.
With the spray bottles I have bought a few different cheap $1-$2 ones and never had any problems, it just takes a few pumps to get it up as it's thicker than water that their meant for. Mine usually get broken from getting dropped before anything else goes wrong with them.
My wife keeps the shed stocked with packs of scourers, she is lucky to get one for the kitchen.lol They come in different thicknesses as well.

Try your local oil supply Dave if you have one, thats where I get my kero. Take your own container though. I have 20litre petrol drums but jerry cans would be a pretty cheap way to go I think if you didnt have an old oil drum or something.

Hi Dave,
Just a note for Adelaide members re kero. It's a problem since kero heaters are not used so much. I was looking for some a couple of years ago & rang one of the petroleum company's & was quoted $95.00 for 20 litres in a new drum. They must be joking. I know of 1 service station that still has a kero tank. Thats the B.P. at Crafers.
There is 1 in Elizabeth for the Northern dwellers (I can probably find out where if anyone needs to know.) Also I know a guy in Marion who still uses a fireside heater &
I can ask him for the city dwellers.
Ian.

I will give that a try, I have just been too lazy in looking for it as I don't use that much and usually just buy it when it's cheap on special. My wife once paid $15 for 4ltrs from bunnings, I told her never again. I will ring around tomorrow as I am getting low with only about a liter left.
The local servo used to have it but got rid of the tank when they renovated.
Containers are no problem, I have a few empty 20ltr thinner drums here from painting cars.
Ian
Don't know of any up my way do you.lol

The first really bad news.
Thought I would empty the gear box oil to see what it looked like.
Couldn't, coz there isnt any in there
Anyone had the gearbox off one of these? I assume there is a gasket which might be a little hard to come by.
I'm thinking about just flushing it with kero and seeing what comes out.
Other that that the cleaning is coming along nicely, if slowly.

Nothing wrong with the kero/oil mix. I have had no problems with garden variety squirter bottles but there is a WD40 bottle which is (allegedly) designed for use with bulk WD40 from a drum, and good for other oily stuff too.
The price of kero is disgusting. The $95 for 20 litres is extortionate considering you can buy 20 litres of WD40 for $120.
Gaskets for shaper gearboxes are a bit easier. You can cut one from gasket paper or just get yourself a tube of black Silastic, both available from 'better' auto shops.
