My Invicta 4M arrived
My shaper came to its new home today. Looks pretty good so far except I dont seem to be able to lock the stroke length adjustment. Time to really get dirty and see what I see. Got to see if I can find a date on this thing.
Thanks to DaveJ for the heads up............ although the boss may not agree
Stuart
P.S. I don't like the look of were the sling is either. But thats what it says in the Invicta manual.Last edited by Stustoys; 20th September 2010 at 03:26 PM. Reason: added p.s.

Hi Stuart,
Don't put the blame on me you bid on it and bought it.lol At least you got it for a good price and it looks to be in good condition.
It's good to see you got it home without any damage and you worked out where to lift it from.
Did you get what looks like the table support in front of it in the ebay photo?
I will check mine but I don't think it has a lock for stroke length, I am pretty sure you just wind the handle and leave it at that and the shaft turns with the machine.
What are the ram and knee ways like?

It's Daves fault! It wont come undone.
The knurled ring arrowed in the picture needs to be undone (I think) to adjust the stroke length. If I turn the shaft it just winds the ram back and forward. Its set on a 4 inch stroke so its a pain to even try and clean it until I get it loose.
The ways look pretty good so far although I havent had to much of a look at them. Can't find a date on it anywhere
I had to go back to pick up the table support because I forgot it...... but I'm not at all sure it is a tbale support for this machine yet.
Back out to the shed

If you undo the ram position nut/bolt on top of the ram and let the connecting rod drop down, you will be able to move the ram where you want it.
If you can I would take the ram off completely and clean the ways before using it to be on the safe side. It doesn't take much grit to do damage.
Mine looks identical, and that collar turns with the shaft on mine and there is a gear inside the housing that runs on that collar.

Looks like a nice toy Stu, well done. If DaveJ had his way, I'd have a shaper by now too....lol
I used one when I started my apprenticeship ( 1982) but have been near one since.

Dave I did that, got some pics of the ram ways. I'd say you're right, it better come off for a look see.
The collar should turn with the shaft when it's locked, but(I believe) undo so the shaft can be turned to adjust the stroke length.
It's cleaning up well so far I think.
Everything else seems pretty good so far. Fingers crossed
lol Sterob, I'm sure he'll find one for you soon

One other problem, no tool holder. I have a left hand 5/16 HSS tool holder for a lathe that will do for some testing. But I'll have to make something I think for late. What size tooling do these things normally use? 1/2"?

I am not a bad influence, we are all tool addicts here and need our fix every now and again.lol
My big shaper has a bit of galling like your on the ways. It's from lack of oil from lazy employee's.
I see yours is a 18incher, to measure the stroke you move the ram to the back and then adjust it off the scale.
When I bought my first one it had me scratching my head as the scale doesn't equal real inches or MM.
I have got a old tafe book here that has a section on shapers, if your interested I could scan them for you.

Ok next stupid question. Anyone run one of these things before it's been bolted down? I assume a short slow stroke should be ok. I'm just not sure where exactly this machine is going to go, so it maybe awhile before it gets bolted down.

My 14M has the same galling and like Dave I was told it was from lack of lubrication... I think they is why some had auto lubrication...
I have a manual on my HDD if anyone is interested.

Hi RC
Is that the MR manual from PM? I have that one thanks. If not I'd like a copy thanks
Do you know when they started making the MR?
Mines an M would that be the model before the MR? Can't find a date on anything so far.
How big is an 14M??

Nice looking unit. The thing is so close in design to my Alba 2S it is uncanny. I few minor differences but I am sure you could swap parts. I believe mine dates from the early 1930's.
I haven't bolted down mine yet but it does tend to creep across the floor especially at higher speeds and heavier cuts.
I might be paranoid but if if you considering bolting it down I'd lean towards a couple of thick rubber washers (urethane would be better) underneath a Nylock nut rather than all-steel bolts to prevent cracking of the cast iron when the casting expands in summer. Or even four short pieces of angle held with dynabolts to the floor only, one on each side and front and rear.

Gerbilsquasher I'll leave it for the minute then, but I might come up with some sort of cross between some jack screws(it can help setup if the machine is level) and your angel iron bump rudders. Assuming of course I get it running, looks like it might have a 4hp motor on it, but that should be ok I think.

No this is a different manual to the PM one... The file is currently in doc format but I will convert it to a pdf to make it smaller..
It is for Elliott shaper models 14M 18M and 24M. (the first number is the stroke in inches)
Elliott bought out Alba but continued to make the same shapers except with the Elliott name on them.. The R in MR simply means rotating table..
