Default What is the iso equivalent of sae 68 ?

HI ALL, Can Someone Please tell Me what the 'ISO' Equivalent is to SAE 68 Gear Oil. The Manual for My Geared Head Mill Drill says 'SAE 68 Gear Oil'. What are other Owners of Geared Head Mill Drills using. My Oil Supplier has supplied Me with Conoco Gear Oil 460, I have not used it Yet. As some charts I have looked at, it does'nt Match up very well.

I bet the manual is wrong...There is no such thing as SAE68... It is ISO68.. Your oil supplier has supplied you with an oil with a viscosity equivalent to SAE140. way way way too heavy.

The SAE numbering system is always ends in either a 5 or a 0.. Like SAE 10
    SAE 30, SAE45 etc etc

Default Geared Head Mill Drill Gearbox oil

    HI .RC.
You could be very well right it might be supposed to be ISO 68. ISO may have been changed to SAE in the Translation. I have just sent an Email to TOP-TECH themselves after finally finding their Website. To try and get an answer from them about the Correct Gearbox Oil Type. On the Weekend I did some Research on the Internet, I found some Mill Drill Owners Manuals. The Oils they listed were: SAE 68, Heavy Grade Motor Oil, 10 - 30w non detergent oil, SAE 30 oil non detergent type. On other Forums I found one Guy using Redline Gear oil 75/90, others saying ISO 68 is Okay.
According to the Viscosity Chart I looked at You are dead Right Conoco 460 is equal to SAE 140 Gear Oil. I asked for light Oil and got Pea Soup. I for one hesitate in using a Motor Oil in the Gearbox, as Motor Oils tend to keep metal particles in suspension. Where as Hydraulic oil lets the particles go. If I get a accurate Answer from Top Tech I will Post it in this Thread.

    Hi
Pardon me from butting in but I may have the answer to your question.
The D used to describe the oil is a term now used to describe Hydraulic oil, and yes don't panic Hydraulic oil is used for many applications.
D32 approx old Sae 10 I used in many air hydraulic tools for fast response D46 I use in my lathe headstock all geared and runs at 2000 rpm D68 not used so far but probably equivalent to sae30-40
D68 is probably just fine in a mill gearbox as you don't need the heavy gluggy stuff unless it leaks badly. Hydraulic oils contain lots of anti-scuffing agents like zinc and also low foaming.
For more info give Houghton oils and chemicals a ring as they specialise in industrial lubricants and located in Moorabin. I used there Hydrodrive products in mills lathes and all manner of systems for many years with great results

    Default Mill Drill Gearbox Oil

HI, Feel free to 'BUT IN' Ray39. I had not heard of the 'D' in Oil ie D68 before now. You are right as well it does seem iso68 (D68) Hydraulic Oil can be used. I Spoke to a Retired Mechanic Friend the other Day, told Him the bits and pieces. His answer was use a Light Gear Oil (not an EP type though) or a Heavy Motor Oil.
I did some more Research yesterday. I am a Member of the Quorn Forum Group on Yahoo, although I do not own a Quorn. Of the Subject I am more interested in Building a 'Bonelle Tool and Cutter Grinder' than the Quorn. Anyway whilst on the Quorn Forum site I was able to search for other Groups. I searched for Mill Drill and came across this Group ' dovetail_colum_mill_group'
Upon Searching through this Site I discovered that ISO68 is definately the right Oil Grade. I also found that the Recommended Oils are 'MobilGear 626' and 'Mobil DTE Oil Heavy Medium (iso68)'. I checked on the Internet on the Oils, I tried to find Equivalents for them not much Luck. It seemed to Me though that the 'Mobil DTE Oil Heavy Medium (iso68) is the better of the two to use. On the Forum I also found mentioned that the Mills run much quiter (not that Mines that noisy anyway) with the 'Mobil DTE Heavy Medium Oil iso68 in them.
Well now I am a Happy Chappy. I never got a Reply from 'Top tech' at all.
    Thanks Guys for Your Help.
