Thread: JD tractor carb repair. Lots of threading.

I got this 1938 JD carb from a customer who saw my CraigsList ad and the cast iron post was wore off where the cast iron float bowl screwed on. I said send it to me i can fix it, somehow. I was going to weld in a new end but figured that would be my last resort. So i turned a small chunk of steel and threaded it to match the threads on the wore off post. They were 7/8-18 and there were 4 or 5 good threads left. Then i threaded a small chunk of steel 7/8-18 to screw the first part i made onto to hold it for threading of the OD which will be 1-18 and to cut the length. So i got the 1" OD threaded now it looks like a threadsert or a small pipe bushing. I screwed the new part onto the carb and checked the length. Now to make a new nut that will be 1-18 on the ID but it has to be an acorn type nut. So i made the hex on my shaper from barstock chucked it up and finished shaping the end and cut it off 9/16" long. Rechucked up the 9/16" part and drilled it a little for final boring and threading. Then came the fun part threading the 1-18 which is only 3/8" deep and a blind hole. So i put a sharpie line on my little HSS threading tool so i know where to stop. Made a few cuts and the carb screwed on perfectly. Long winded i know but it was a fun repair and the carb should last another 75 years...Bob
