That is fantastic Bob. Keith Fenner or Donald Cosset did a similar job with a Sibley Drill Press, but I believe it was an electric drill used to drive the boring bar. Nice idea with the mill.

Dean,
Thanks for your reply. I have seen some of the work that Donald Cosset did on his Silbey drill rebuild, his drill is a bit larger than mine and I doubt that he could have used his mill on it.From memory he used a reduction gearbox and a drill to drive his boring bar. Keith Fenner's drill is a bigger one again a 36" model if I recall, that would not fit into my shed. I have gained a lot of ideas from both of them and do enjoy watching their videos.

Nice job, I like your idea of using body filler to match the casting contour...

Hi Bob,
I had a look at the oilers at the weekend and while not up to scratch on the oilers that have cast brass tops and bottoms I have to say that they aren't bad quality.
I took a couple of pics for you.

Hi Phil,
Thanks for your efforts and the pictures and assessment of the oilers.I did see that they are of Indian manufacture somewhere, so I did not expect that they would be top quality. At the moment I cannot get his site to work, I will try it later. I think I would need the second size one up,one up from the smallest.I hope his site has some dimensions on it not just capacity.

Hi Phil,
Earlier when I tried the link it only came up with his home page and would not let me go any further. I have just tried it again and it is working fine now, I see the dimensions that you were referring to. I have just sent "Len" an email checking on his stock.
Thanks, Bob

Jones and Shipman Drill
Well the time has come, the Jones & Shipman drill can operate again. Thanks to all "forumites" that have helped with advice and contacts. I have quite a few pictures so have broken them up into three posts.
After removing 80 years worth of grime, two layers of old paint and a huge mud wasp nest that had almost filled the entire main column I could see the work needed to bring this drill back to life. Here is a summary of the work.
Bored and bronze sleeved the top drive shaft and repaired all key ways and fitted new keys.
Made a new set of dog gears for the drill handle/power down feed mechanism.
Designed and made the two gear changing mechanisms to enable the high speed and back gears to be engaged/disengaged.
Made a handle assembly and dog gear set to enable the table to be raised and lowered and fitted a spring safety catch.
Bored and fitted a bronze sleeve into the quill, re cut the quill rack gear.
Repaired the power down feed shaft and made a new gear selector sliding key. Repaired all the down feed gears. The gearbox had been assembled incorrectly in the past and all the gears had damaged key ways, re machined and made new keys.
Made a new top for the drill table.
Made up two guards, one for the electric motor and one to cover the top of the power down feed gears.
Painted the drill. It was originally green a few shades darker. I wanted to use Wattle Killrust paint and after three goes this is as close as my local supplier could get.
Lots of pictures of the drill and parts with and without the guards.

Thanks Phil and thanks for your help. The brass oilers need a bit of work, they are pretty roughly machined in the needle flow area. I took to the needles with a bit of wet & dry and smoothed them down so that I could get a bit of flow control. A bit of adjusting with them now should sort it out.

Hi Bob, excellent work on the restoration. If you find that too much oil is being used, MEW had an article on how to get around that problem. Can find it if required.
