Attached are a couple of photos of the set up I was using.

Basically I was bolted down to a piece of steel flat with a fastener in the centre and one on the end of the tail. Th R/T is an 8". The first photo is getting the external shape right, the second taking the round section down in thickness. Once that was done the middle hole was bored out in the lathe (3 jaw chuck).
It could be done with a file, but that's a lot of filing and I'd like to keep both round sections round so that when they rotate they don't show steps. In this case I was milling to scribed lines but more complex features and it gets complicated, hence the question on how to preserve a datum.
