I tried a couple of keyless chucks on the drill press and went back to key chucks.

Haven't tried his keyless chucks, but have purchased his keyed chuck, both 1/4" and 3/8", very happy with them. In fact I am about to order some more.

Same here, I've always had trouble with the keyless chucks on my Metabo drills jamming when using 1/2" and larger drills in steel. I've replaced them with keyed chucks in both cases.

I have a 1/2" keyless chuck on my drillpress and have found no problems either with it holding very small bits or larger ones. I bought it off eBay. Although cannot remember who I bought it from, it looks the same as this item 1/2 keyless drill chuck MT2 shank arbor (eBay item 110608578496 end time 07-Dec-10 21:20:50 AEDST) : Industrial After basking in the convenience and superior gripping power of this well-made keyless chuck, I would not go back to a keyed chuck.

That keyless chuck looks the same as ones at McJings for about the same price.

I bought one for a Carbatec pedestal drill - very happy with it.

    personal preference really.
I have not used those in particular, but have used many of both types in many hand drills and drill presses and lathes.

I prefer keyed in drill presses and lathes, thats just me. frustrating when the keyless wont let go of the bit. You can use c-spanners on some chucks when they grab, but then its just like having a chuck key i figure. usually managed to keep requiured chuck key with the machine
In hand drill, I found keyless to be more convenient if changing drill bits frequesntly on one job and nothing worse than getting up a ladder, in the back of a machine or somewhere confined or tricky to get in/out and realising you left the chuck key on the bench or in your toolbox, or out the back in your ute.

I bought the one in Blu_Rock's link. It had more runout than I would like. I forget how much now. When I queried it he said spec was .0048". That's .12mm. Since I complained he's removed the word precision. I found the maker's website. It seems they have two tolerances. Clearly I got the cheaper one. My advice is ask first.

What I will say about it though is that it seems to grip well, yet is never hard to release. I would buy one again, IF I could find the higher spec one AND it was reasonably priced.

I have two of these McJing chucks, one on my pedestal drill and one on on my lathe. They both work really well up to about 10 mm diameter, above that I switch to a keyed chuck.

One of the jaws snapped in one of the chucks and McJings replaced it in very quick order.

    Hello Eskimo,
I bought a 1mm-13mm keyless chuck for my lathe about three years ago from Ebay seller "bsello168" . I have been very happy with it. He has one for sale "Buy it now" for $25.30 plus $10.06 postage . It also comes with a No.2 morse arbor. I dont know how that compares with your prices. I bought it with the view that if it was a dud it would not break me, but it has worked perfectly.
    Regards,
    Russell
