    Default Kopp variator

    Hi

Just wondering if there is a web page on these e.g, the theory of operation of the balls and the cones. These devices were used on some machinery before the electronic VFD era . The advantage of the mechanical version, is apparently, no loss of torque with revs change . ...Mike

Maybe the attached docs on Kopp variator construction and maintenance will assist.

I could say the same. My Chippy is in bits for a total check over, clean, replacement of seals etc and possibly a bed regrind. The variator really ought to be checked as well, but the whole project is currently on hold while more pressing things happen.

They are a PITA. Mine suffers from stiction at times and if you run it down to say 350 rpm in high range there is bugger-all torque. Run it up to 300 rpm in low range and it's noisy - liveable though; I hear they sound like a bunch of rocks in a cement mixer when they're really on the way out.

I have had mine apart, balls & races looked perfect, no visible wear, doesn't make horrible noises, definitely works but I still don't like it. I changed the oil in mine, new gaskets etc, slight improvement but....

Frankly given the modern VFD's I'd dump the Kopp variator, fit a 2 speed intermediate layshaft and a 5 HP 3 phase motor. The trouble with the VFD's is you're not going to get the 10:1 speed range you get with the variator so aiming for 5:1 and a 2 speed layshaft means you have to change a belt occasionally but still have good performance over the speed range. Same reason for going from the 3HP motor to a 5HP, up the available torque at low Hz. There's plenty of room inside the casing once you scrap the variator.

Got a pile of pictures of the interior of mine somewhere but as I only have dialup net access ATM I won't be posting any unless there's a bit you really, really need to see.
