Just for comparison, here is an OPL dividing head. The illuminated screen brightness is more than likely as it should be. I'm imagining that the bright spot is from the camera. Sadly the head is a bit too big for my mill.

BT,
I think some of the optics are to make sure the blub filement is as out of focus as possible so you get a nice smooth light. I dont think this is such an issue with LEDS.
I'm guessing also

Hi BT,
You could just turn up a collar to slide over the standard E10 holder, and still use the grub screws to align the optics.

I purchased one of the lamps suggested (LED 1W Miniature E10 T3 1/4 6V Mini Screw E10 Base Warm White) and its output was disappointing. It would not adequately illuminate the scale. I then went ahead and purchased a white Zenon 6000K LED from Germany and collected it from the post office this morning. The difference between the output of the two lamps is chalk and cheese. The German ( country of purchase, I dare say, not origin) lamp is blindingly bright. And will function adequately powered by four rechargeable 1.2 volt batteries.
The plan now is to devise a plug in or screw in receptacle for the battery pack and lamp holder incorporating a switch. The 90 cent E10 lamp holder is a chintzy affair. I have found some Russian lamp holders that look like an improvement and may facilitate the construction of a more durable device. Alltronics and Jaycar don't offer a more substantial fitting than the 90 cent version pictured.

The switch I'm dreaming about would be a small push button on off with a protective rubber cover. I know rubbered up toggle switches are available from the sellers mentioned above but they are too big. The cheapo battery pack I plan to use will fit inside a 37.5mm bore.
Does anyone know of another source of neat small push button switches? Those on Ebay look similar to the switches sold by Jaycar etc.

Hi Bob
RS Components
Farnell now called Element 13 or some silly name
Utilux
Unfortunately nearly all eventually end up made in China.
Those fittings wbere popular 50 years or so ago so maybe old torch or army item may be an idea. Same kind of LED would also come as T10 base but similar base choices, although used in dashboards etc.

Hello James,
I'm sort of committed to the E10s. I hit the buy it now button on another two "Germans".
Element 13 has now rung a bell. Thank you. Ray G mentioned them during a conversation we had about componentry. I couldn't remember the name.
Bob.

I had a look at the Element 14 site. It certainly is comprehensive.
I had another look on Ebay and found some switches made (or sold by) Judco Manufacturing in the States. J 188 Series Judco Switch Push Button Mini SPST on Off 250 Vac 1A 10 Pcs w Boot | eBay
These look ideal. They have rubber boots to boot and the seller will only sell to the US. Always a catch. I'll send my little brother in New Jersey a pleading email.

Hi BT,
I wouldn't buy that ebay switch, he wants $14 for what is a 1 or 2 dollar switch, I'm placing orders with DigiKey and Mouser every week or so, and I'm doing one this week, so I could tack one onto the next order if you want,

Pick out the style and version you want and I'll order it.

PS... VBulletin's editor has shortcut the link to say Invalid Request? but it still seems to work, if it doesn't try this Invalid Request
and click the boxes to narrow down the product search, wire leads, on/off, in stock etc.. etc..

Hello Ray,
Thank you for your generous offer. At risk of me appearing greedy and if it's not too much trouble is there any chance of two switches and two boots?

The Ebay sellers was offering ten switches for 14 bucks but not shipping outside the US.
