Hi
I think you're under estimating the weight, it is half a ton.Thats the weight of 2 of the big Harley Davidson's or 2 1/2 44 gallon drums full of water? Is there any way you could use your chain block in the shed with putting something temporary up to lift off.

Price of brake lathe and beware of flywheels
A new off the care brake lathe run to over $9000.00 and are designed to cut both faces square to brake lathe shaft. Your set up in a normal lathe would have to be spot on when you reversed the disk for cutting the other side.
I have tried to skim flywheels on my brake lathes but the flywheel seems to become hardened in use and the cutter skids across this area while cutting the softer parts, you end up with a stuffed flywheel. We send them out to be surfaced
ground.
To cut disks you would need a large lathe and a brave heart unless your set up was very secure, a disk comming free while spinning would scare me and a flywheel weighs even more.
Good luck with your search for a lathe but given the price of a brake lathe that can only do one job I think you would be better to pay someone to do these for you.
