Thats ok your negativity is rightfully realistic mate thank you. Welding the cast iron is something i was thinking about, after doing some goggleing, i need advice like yours to steer me in the right direction, i was always going to ring and get advice from an engineer and get him to do it if he wishes to do so that is, i doubt i would attempt it my self.
Looking at it again today i can see that i can make up an acme nut, not only for the cross feed but for the compound also rather than welding the compound at all. This will require the compound be machined flat and a chamfer approx 3mm deep, replacing the worn cast thread.
Have to be carfull not to take away too mauch material as it would deffinitly weeken the compound nut area.
Does this sound like a better solution Grahame??

Bought a threaded rod and nuts from Bunnings, welded up the 3 nuts and a drilled and taped pedistal under it, new mild steel cross feed nut done (temporarily) mounted it on the cross slide, locked up the compound slide by bolting it up, got rid of the lead screw for the compound as explained the intigrated cast nut is rooted.
Used the lathe tonight its seems ok, actually it dosnt shudder like before, so now its time to make my acme threads and nut

    Default Lathe parts

    Gday Bart

It sure sounds a better way to go.I don't know a lot about lathe repair, but this way seems heaps better than attacking it with a welder.

You can only learn by having a go yourself.
    Cheers
    Grahame

    g'day Bart,
give us an update on your progress. If you are still having problems, PM me with pitch, diameter, length etc. etc and I will try to help. I could either do them for you (but I live in the bush) or give you a contact in Sydney who could knock them up.

    Cheers,
    Bondy
