Over on the PM site Richard King often makes mention that when he scrapes the ways of a machine where the moving part is longer then the supporting part he will deliberately scrape one part not flat... He often uses the example of cylindrical grinders where the table on top is often longer then the bed and as it goes along, the end will droop down.. So if the bed was scraped hollow and the ends high, as the table moves along the unsupported end will start rising and the supported end will start dropping a bit..
