If I need all the Z, I use a spindle centre.
If I need to not disturb the compound I do this  for not planning better.

An insightful thread. I can't figure out what the taper is in my headstock (early model Qualos), I only know it is bigger than MT3. In any case (if I figured out what it is), it isn't the smoothest surface, and I'm not sure I'd trust it anyway.
So, the only way I can figure out to turn between centres is to mount a bar in the chuck and turn a centre on it. I'd rather not have to, given it restricts the length of a workpiece I can turn. But it's better than nothing.

A pic . Skimming the rust from a 30mm black bar . The DOC is about .030" . The tool has a .5mm tip radius , or slightly less . The RPM 310 . Feed rate was slow . The finish is good, the tool is sharp . Mike
