Lathe speed sets
Looking at upgrading my lathe to make it more user friendly, so plan is to fit a bigger chuck (4-jaw), get or make a faceplate, get a QCTP, adapt a compound slide for it, and upgrade the motor, which is currently 1/2HP resistor start.
Before I replace the motor, some advice would be appreciated.
I can either go .075HP 4-pole, or 0.75HP 6-pole.
The 4-pole gives me a speed set as follows:
365
415
735
970
1390
The 6-pole gives me:
245
275
490
645
926
I realise that neither of these sets is ideal across the board, but over the years it seems that most of the jobs I have done on the lathe are on the larger rather than the smaller side.
There is also the possibility of finding another 3-step pulley for the motor, with larger pulleys to get higher speeds. It's not a big job to swap pulleys if needed for higher speeds, but no guarantee I can find such a pulley set, but quite likely I can find (or make) a single larger one.
Thoughts?
