Default Lathe thread cutting change gear calculator

When I recently got my lathe I found that it was missing one of the change gears and hence some of the ratio's listed on the plate could not be used. So I went searching and found a couple of other calculators, but none that had the features I wanted ... so I made my own.

Here is the link - https://www.woodworkforums.com/attach...1&d=1275121329
It allows you to enter up to 50 gears and 50 quick change/screw cutting gearbox ratios and also the pitch of your leadscrew (it will also save those for next time you use it). You then simply enter the pitch of the screw you wish to cut and it will list all the possible gear combinations.

Feel free to use it as you wish ... and I would welcome any feedback.

    Enjoy.
    Cheers.

    Vernon.

I have downloaded this file twice and tried two different un-zippers - the Extractor and Windows Explorer(W7) - and both resulted in no output file. Windows Explorer says that the compressed folder is invalid. Could you check the link/file and post your results here? I want to know if it is my system or the file. Cheers!

Have downloaded the zip file and it unzips without a problem on my computer (Win XP and WinZip).

Haven't seriously used the program yet, mainly because I haven't gathered all the data it needs yet, but it looks very professional and useful.

    Thanks Vernonv

    Curiouser and curiouser!

I downloaded WinRAR(smaller than WinZip) and it outputs a file - but the file is listed as "Type of file: File". Not much use.

I am guessing it should be a spreadsheet file format of some type - ?????.xls or something similar.

I am running Windows 7 64-bit, and downloaded the 64-bit version of WinRAR. The Extractor has worked on every other zipped file I have thrown at it so far.

    Any ideas anyone?

Funny, I seem to be having the same problem. The version I uploaded I can unzip OK, but the version I downloaded I can't.

I'm not sure what exactly is broken? I can't upload the file again without the mods assistance, but I can email you the file if you PM me your email address.
    Cheers.

Vernon, our backroom boffin has now increased the allowable file size for a zip file.

I will try to attach it to this post and see whether that fixes the problem.

Vernon sent me the files by email and they worked perfectly. Still dont know what the issue was, but it doesnt really matter now anyway.

Thanks to Vernon for his efforts on my behalf.

    Hi Vernon,

Congratulations on a nice professional looking job, I can see this being a very useful piece of software.

    Regards
    Ray

PS: Downloaded and unzipped no problems, I still like XP over the later versions of windows.

I am not sure if I am missing something fundamental... I often do, but I can download and extract the file with no problems but the resulting LatheGears file has no extention so windows can't work out what to open it with.
I have tried the usual .exe, .xls, .doc etc but none of these work.
What program should be used to open the file?
    Cheers,
    Greg.

You have just discovered the problem. The zip file should contain two files LatheGears.exe and LatheGears.ini.

Send me a PM with your email address if you want me to send the files directly to you.

BTW: do you have WinRAR installed?
    Cheers.

    Vernon.

Just checked the zip file I downloaded again from post #1.

It contains 2 files Lathegears.exe and Lathegears.ini, after unzipping they worked perfectly on my computer.

Yep, I think that it's something at our end that is causing the problem, not the WWF. Not sure what it is though.
    Cheers.

    Vernon.
