Lifting surface grinder ????????
Hi, I have taken a punt on a jones & shipman 1400 surface grinder and are going to pick it up in the morning, does anybody know where the lifting straps should/could be attached to the front of the machine ?
It has a couple of eye bolts on top of the tower but I can't see anything at the front that I could hook onto.
Thanks john

Does it have the two cast in hooks on the front just under the saddle?
If it is like the 540 I suggest draining the hydraulic oil otherwise it will slosh out everywhere on the trip home...Light red, the colour of choice for the discerning man.

G/day RC.
This is a picture of the machine, not the actual one that I have punted on, doesn't seem to have them ?
Nor on the side ?

Hi John,
I don't know much about the specifics of the Jones & Shipman 1400.. but...
Check to see how the table is mounted, some of them run on balls which will dimple ( brinell? ) the ways if it gets bumped, or just vibration during transit, see if you can remove the table, or lock it down on wooden spacers.
Regards
Ray

Hi John,
There's an operator manual for the 1400 here, Index of /grinder-manual I haven't downloaded it, but there might be some information on lifting points in there somewhere..
Regards

The eagle has landed
Here is some pic's of how I lifted this surface grinder off the pellet and put it into position.
Thanks again for the link to that manual Ray, without that I don't think that I would have been too confident
about using 2 x 3/8 whitworth bolts to lift the front of the machine, well.....actually I used 2 x 3/8 ht unc.
I wanted to get the machine under the mezzanine floor so that I didn't lose work space and that didn't give me much room above to get it in.

Well done John!
I'm more than a little jealous right now, for.some reason I have always wanted a surface grinder, even since before I owned my first lathe........I'm sitting taking a break from plastering and can't stop the drool!
Does this mean though the austolite has been bumped down on the to do list?1915 17"x50" LeBlond heavy duty Lathe, 24" Queen city shaper, 1970's G Vernier FV.3.TO Universal Mill, 1958 Blohm HFS 6 surface grinder, 1942 Rivett 715 Lathe, 14"x40" Antrac Lathe, Startrite H225 Bandsaw, 1949 Hercus Camelback Drill press, 1947 Holbrook C10 Lathe.

hahaha, yeah the austolite is on the back burner, the grinder should/maybe/hopefully just need
cleaning/servicing and piping the hydraulics and coolant ect, no doubt I am dreaming tho
The ram on the austolite might be the first job for the grinder, but then again I haven't measured it yet.
