I was amused to see chalked dimensions in imperial. Metric would not cut the mustard.

4-6-4, where will this loco see service when it's restored? Assuming it's being restored at the New Port Railway Shops, are visitors welcome?

Thanks and more power to you 4-6-4 and all the steam engine restorers. I have fond memories of steam trains when I was a kid, so seeing them preserved and running is just magic.

Yes that was i8nteresting about the Deltic I think theyn were a Triangular opposed piston desighn. Plus there were two engines never thought that I would see the preserved one run. We do it all the time with B, S and T classes most of which are over 40 years old still running because of power shortages. 4-6-4

    4-6-4,
They were, thats why the "delta" Δ. Wasn't a British design but they made it work by making one of the cranks turn barkwards. So the story goes anyway.

How often do you use the Bullard, only a small chuck,is it 36".
Do you ever have a problem locateing and locking the turret if you have a large bar in.

    Default Machines

Greetings chaps I am only just moving into 12 Road which is now a Turnery. Steam Rail own the Machinery. I am salivating over the Kearns Horizontal Borer. It is fully operational. My New Visby lathe is taking the place of an old knackered Lang and the Arno Mill is likewise taking the place of a very strange mill. It is only of late that there have been a few machinists and a place to put the machines.
I didnot see it but they used the Vertical Borer to part off a cylinder of cast iron for piston rings a meter long x 12 inches dia. It was parted off into three sections I will photograph the remaining bits. This was for the rings on the piston valves on R 707. I have parted off head metal on crusher rolls that was exciting but piston material I think was over that which I did. Glad you like the pics. 4-6-4 Rod H

Is there much info around re the streamlined Spirit of Progress steam locos. For example, were any saved for posterity, or were they all scrapped. If one still remains, could it be brought back into service for an historical run up to Albury and back?

I recall as a kid, dad taking me into Spencer Street, just to see the loco. It sent shivers down my spine just standing there in awe. I recall the panting sounds with releases of steam, sometimes, just to scare the living daylights out of us kids.

When finally the station master's whistle went, it was pants wetting time. The haunting steam whistle, followed by this huge hulk coming to full life and moving, still haunts me to this day.

Is there somewhere where I can get archival footage of this manificent machine? In particular the whistle, the panting, and running sounds.

    Default S Class

Dear Ken, They have all gone early 50,s the B class diesels had arrived and were not able to hold the steam times. It is said that there was a strong feeling to bring the s class back but the powers that be decided to cut them up It was criminal that all four received the same fate. It is also said that the blokes at Newport tried to hide one so it could be saved. Pretty hard to hide one even at Newport. They were a bit of a problem because of the axle loading they could only run to Albury with the H class. Bridges else where on the system would have had to be reinforced and the weight of rails increases to run them. A friend of mine actually worked on them as a fitter at Wodonga as a relieving man. The H class 4-8-4 3 cylindered locos could hold Spirit times because it would go uphill and down at the same speed. One of my school mates was on the odd occasion taken in to see the Spirit leave just like you. The H survived and is in the Museum on Champion Rd Williamastown But the Museum is closed at present pending a decision on where it is to be moved to. Yours Rod
