Default I love my bandsaw, but.....

......the clamping setup/mechanism is a bit of a ba-st-ard and could have been thought out a whole lot better.

It's great for biggish lumps of metal, but smallish pieces are almost impossible to hold the way the clamp is on the BS-5S
    Cheers,

    Jim

Mods to hold small pieces are relatively easy to implement.

What is needed is a way to move the fixed clamp jaw closer to the blade
    AND
While the moveable jaw is usually able to move right up against the blade it may the rotate so you need a stop of some kind to do that.

Here is how I did mine.

Bobs saw is slightly different to ours Jim. I have a removable face on the fixed jaw that has only about 1mm clearance to the blade. I also have one of RC's bandsaw clamps which is great. In phone now so bit hard to add the thread link, but just search for bandsaw clamp and it should be easy enough to find.

Bobs link reminded me that I still have not sorted a coolant system out yet.

    Cheers

    Hi Ew,

I have noticed that the BS5 is differently set up than the others.

    Just doing a search now.

    Jim,

I'm a lazy bastard. I must be the only owner of a 4 x 6 bandsaw who hasn't modified it. It has received one improvement and that was from the hands of RC. You need one of these.

MEW had a few articles back a few months ago on the band saw mods, one was a plate that had a lot of holes, that odd sized metal could be clamped on it. I'll find the issue numbers if you want. I can't download on here, but am prepared to photo copy the pages and snail mail/post if required. PM me if you want them.

    Default Bs5s

I’ve made a few mods to my BS5S: A couple of adjustments to line up the blade and I also welded a washer to the bottom of the off switch actuator so now it doesn’t start again a few seconds or minutes after stopping. I used to have a coolant pump but the fine swarf proved problematic so I replaced it with a gravity feed system. Two five litre buckets with lids, a couple of small retic taps, some black retic tube, a drain on the table, a gravity filter and I also made a rubber seal to stop the coolant exiting the blade at the back of the saw. I intend making a sliding weight thingy to adjust the down pressure, similar to power hacksaws. One day.

    Default Extra picture

I instructed the computer not to include the picture of the kayak rack, but it ignored me. Apparently 'it' knows best.

A couple of REE magnets in the coolant collecting tray will deal with that problem. This allows the coolant tank/pump to be stored under the BS so it can easily be moved around.

It's frustrating, Got the same problem before with my band saw ; clamp mechanism was not helpful esp when cutting round stock. My temporary solution was turning the drill press vise upside down and clamp the stock with it laying on the table. Worked well.
