low quality HSS blanks
The HSS blank lathe tooling as sold on EPAY by various vendors ... with made in CHINA marked on them. Is it just me, or have others found these to be of dubious quality . After grinding and a hone, they seem to last about 5 mins and they are dull and blunt . Does anyone know where to get old P&N or better quality stuff ? Mike

Hi Mike,
Try to get some WKE45. It is 11% cobalt, hard as all get out. It can be a little brittle though. It is all i use these days, i get seco stuff locally. There is some on ebay, the price is high compared to the cheap stuff though.

I've been thinking the same thing and wondering about the HSS blanks I bought off eBay and if all HSS is equal.

ozmestore.
I've noticed that too. The last lot I got was from ozmestore, they're a lot better than the usual Chinese stuff, seem to last longer. Not sure about sizes tough, he may only sell the smaller stuff.

Hi Mike,
You could also try the Crobolt stuff from the bloke who sells the Diamond Tool Holder. It's really expensive but beats HSS hands down.

Hi Eddie
I wish there were tool shops like that one in Wang around here LOL . Most tools shop employ younger staff these days , they would not have a clue what those HSS blanks are used for !
Thanks for the kind offer . I will see how I go before taking any of those blanks off your hands .. Mike
