Light the barbie, and set a mostly empty 27Kg cylinder on it, and go for lunch; preferably somewhere quite distant. When you get back, and with a bit of luck, the top of the cylinder should have disappeared, so you can then weld on a chimney.... :eek:

Not sure how small a potbelly your talking.

Too small and it will be next to useless.

I find the potbelly stoves, burn wood too quickly.

I would have thought second hand you would find something.

The councils that are offering cash for wood heaters; How do they dispose of them?

Anyway, about building one, look on the web, plenty of info.

Pull the valve off of the LPG cylinder wash out the inside.

Cut the top so it can sit back on flush.

Cut a piece of the guts and wack on some hinges.

You will need something to catch the ash and allow air from the bottom to circulate to the top.

At the back you will need a flue opening.

Too much hard work and hassle; for $200 a second hand slow combustion must be available.

Not sure if the gas bottles would last either.

I notice in tassie a bloke is selling wood heaters from beer kegs

Yeah, I know the bloke, always drunk, can't keep up with demand. thinking about becoming his partner. Just to help you understand.

Give the using the gas cylinder the flick not only dangerous in construction but it will be less than durable. Have you got a truck Mech in your area? If so go and see him and get three of old brake drums and make a stove out of them wonder full heat resistance and most durable.
turn one upside down and weld open ends together cut a cover for top cut chimney hole and gate hole weld closed ends together at bottom and weld grate at small hole.. then close large bottom end with 1/4 plate with trap door for ashes removal Weld some legs on and bob your uncle a home made blast furnance That will loutlast you and me. Hope this helps if you want a mud map just yell and i wil make you one (I'm no draughtsman) but you will be able to follow it

Bunnies warehouse on main north road had small pot bellies last time I was there (3-4 weeks ago). Can't recall the price, but pretty cheapish.

id go with molls advice ive seen made from truck brake drums they are very good if yuo have the time . my bro who owns a large mechanical workshop has one made from boiler tube ( about 400 mm diam if i remebr right and 600 high) ex lpg bottles are only thin walled ( fillit with water at least before yuo cut it ) or BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM
