Pathetic? Only part of human nature! (although with machines and cars it can be inverse for some of us older = gooder)

Come on Bob, we want some of your top class photo's.

You will have to wait a bit for the studio photos Ew. I have some serious wriggling to do with Miss Svelte to get her into the shed.

Hi Bob, I'm from the country but as it happens I'm in Perth right now and I could be interested in taking it off your hands. What is worn out and why could it not be repaired?
    Regards

    Have a read here Bradford - https://www.woodworkforums.com/f65/ne...ml#post1335071

The machine is probably sixty years old. The design allows grinding dust to fall onto the Y and Z ways and if the table is over extended, onto the table ways too. There is more than half a millimeter fall in the table as it's traversed.

A tool and cutter grinder, even if unworn, needs accessories. The 3 came with a tailstock and an internal grinding attachment, the latter has a bent spindle.

There is a lot of reading there Bob, I didn't get through it all, did you try any of the suggested ideas?
I would still be interested in the machine, I normally would have said that I could fix it, but since it looks like your skills in that department are greater than mine, I'm now not so sure. I'm staying in the Armadale area while I'm here, but we are planning on going home tomorrow and coming back in a week, might be able to organize a look at then.

    Default Nearly All Gone

First thing this morning I watched a truck haul off the skip containing a carob tree and most of the hopelessly worn out No. 3. What's left is the lower section of the base, the handwheels, part of the table and the spindle casting and spindle assembly. I'll keep the wheels and the table. PDW expressed an interest in the spindle and some of the small bits. Jordan was also interested in the small bits. The only small bits worth keeping were the graduated collars. The shafts they fit were that worn they were stepped. The gib strips were also worn that severely that they were lipped.

There is a tailstock and an internal grinding spindle looking for a home. Free but you pay for postage - https://www.woodworkforums.com/f65/ba...4/#post1464104

If anyone local wants the base it's their's for nothing. Trailer or ute access is easy. If it doesn't go I'll cut it up and feed it slowly into the Sulo bin.

    BT

ps. Some may think it a bit excessive to throw the machine out. In my mind it was worn past the point of usefulness and not worth spending any further effort or money on. A six hundred dollar lesson on the need to inspect critically, used machines prior to purchase.

If you have a better one of these than the one that came with mine, I'm interested.

I don't have an internal grinding spindle either.

The flange nut that holds the wheels on the external spindle needs replacing too.

Let's know if any or all are available, thanks Bob.

I'm assuming, until proven otherwise, that my No.3 has some life left in it.DSCF1178.jpg

    Stu,

I know you beat Jordan to the draw but the bits fit his grinder. A tailstock without a matching headstock is about as useless as a broken thong. Mind if I send them to Jordan?

    Hi Bt,
Not at all, I was putting my hand up in case no one else could use them.

    Thank you Stu.

Further to Jordan's query regarding the wheel retention nut. I made a new nut to suit the worn spindle thread. It really needs to go with the spindle. If Peter doesn't want the spindle and associated paraphernalia, it's Jordan's.

    BT

    ps.

BobL is possibly interested in the base. Here is a photo showing the 13 in the process of its removal from a trailer. It would be a simple matter of sliding the base straight into Bob's van.

It is good to see that parts of this grinder are going to be put to use even if the main part of it is worn out. Better than just dumping it.
